Subaru Legacy B4 2.5GT tS – Click above for high-res image gallery

We've grown quite fond of our long-term 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT over the past few months, but we can't help but be somewhat jealous of the STI-tuned Legacy that's just been released in Japan. Subaru's in-house tuning department has laid hands on the new-for-2010 Legacy sedan (and the not-for-U.S. wagon!) to create the B4 2.5GT tS, which features a host of cosmetic and dynamic enhancements, even though the turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer remains unchanged.

Visually, the tS (which stands for "Tuned by STI") gets a new front lip spoiler, as well as a subtle deckled spoiler out back (fixed to the roof on wagon models). New 18-inch alloys wrapped in 225/45-series rubber sit at the corners and appropriate badging is applied all around. Inside, there's a revised instrument cluster, sport seats, carbon trim, a leather-wrapped STI steering wheel and, of course, STI branding on the shifter and floor mats.

Where the tS gets good, however, is in its performance upgrades, which include a sport exhaust system, a more robust Bilstein suspension, and new strut tower bars. Because the turbocharged flat-four keeps its stock output - 265 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque - this hotted-up Legacy won't be any quicker on the street. The other tweaks should make it even more poised during sporty driving, though.

While this may seem like just another juicy piece of Forbidden Fruit, we're sure that STI has upgrades for the U.S.-spec Legacy in the pipeline. (Please!) Scroll through the gallery below to see the Legacy tS's upgrades in detail.

So do we have to start calling the impreza version the Subaru Impreza WRX STi now? Because I rather liked just shortening it to the STi...

I'm confused as to the point of this car. Maybe a 10 years after mid-life crisis car?

The biggest automotive mistake of my life: purchasing an 05 Legacy GT sedan rather than the wagon. If I had gotten the wagon I'd still have it.

Nobody builds affordable, fast, "dad" cars for the us market.

that car is ugly compared to my fusion
Damn it I meant to write looks not look.
First of all there is no such word as "hottiest" and second the fusion look just as plain as Camcord. There's nothing special about the car with the possible exception that there hasn't been massive recall like Camry, or to lesser extend, Accord.

And we all know look is only skin deep...

Some Subarus certainly have a unique "style" - the Forester is pretty good looking, and the main-streamed Tribeca as well, but I can't warm up to up to the new Legacy / Outback, and half of the WRX / Impreza line is equally off. They will fit right into the Toyota universe.

Man, look at the size of that front overhang. No wonder they had to make the headlights and wheel arches so huge, they are trying to disguise the huge size of the front end.

needs brembo brakes and 300 hp.

I own a WRX. The WRX isn't exactly a beautiful car, but this...

"we're sure that STI has upgrades for the U.S.-spec Legacy in the pipeline"

      Yeah, right.

      3.0R Spec B
      Blitzen
previous Tuned by STI Legacy models
      WR Limited commemorative edition
      and the full-boat S402

      All beg to differ.

JDM and the rest of the world markets get the nice Legacys. We get watered down, and barely optioned, and since the 2010 model, now ugly.

Subaru hasn't even offered a manual and H6 combination in the US market in recent memory. How many folks even remember the Subaru XT6?

Overseas, the Legacy 3.0R Spec.B offered that, along with bilsteins and other sport package pieces.

Do not hold your breath for more from Subaru of America. You'll suffocate first. The current Legacy GT is barely stocked as it is, and isn't as well equipped, even fully loaded, as the US market 2009 2.5 GT Spec.B was.

The previous gen Legacy was quite a looker. This car just doesn't do it for me.
That's a really ugly car, especially with those fenders... but I want one nonetheless
        • 4 Years Ago
I actually like the look of the wagon, but I could be biased though because I always love high performance wagons with manual boxes.
