2011 Ford Mustang GT RTR by Vaughn Gittin Jr. – Click above for high-res image gallery

Vaughn Gittin Jr. is intimately familiar with extracting every last bit of performance from the Ford Mustang, so it's no surprise the FoMoCo has tapped the Formula Drifting ace to create a limited edition 'Stang for the 2011 model year.

Based on the new 5.0-liter V8 Mustang GT, the RTR package boasts a comprehensive list of upgrades, including new springs and shocks that drop the Mustang 1.5 inches over specially designed 19-inch RTR wheels each wrapped in Falken FK452 high-performance rubber. A larger rear sway bar aids rotation and cross-drilled and slotted rotors should keep things cool when hauling the massive coupe to a halt. Under the hood, the only major modification is a K&N high-flow air filter, but combined with a Ford Racing ECU tune and a set of new mufflers, the breathing mods are good for an extra nine horsepower, netting a total of 421 ponies.

On the outside, the RTR benefits from a front splitter, aluminum spoiler and a graphics package, while the interior gets a smatter of badges on the doors, shifter and floormats. The whole package will set you back $7,895 and Ford plans to offer a V6 version later this year. Head over to MustangRTR.com for more details, and make the jump for a video and the complete press release.

CONTEXT / BACKGROUND
Professional driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. knows what Mustangs can do – and he wanted to share that knowledge with Mustang enthusiasts who appreciate the car's power and capability. Mustang RTR is Gittin Jr.'s vision for introducing a new generation of owners to Mustang, while catering to traditional Mustang enthusiasts. He helped develop the RTR package, which provides performance and appearance upgrades, to allow pony car lovers to make the most of their driving experience.

DETAILS

The 2011 Ford Mustang is known for its incredible performance and impressive looks, and now there's a new package that takes those qualities one step further – Mustang RTR. The dealer-installed package from Vaughn Gittin Jr., driver of the Monster Energy/Falken Tire 2011 Mustang GT in Formula Drift, and Ford Racing Performance Parts, is aimed toward a new generation of Mustang owners.

The performance upgrade comes with Ford Racing calibration with a high-flow filter and high-performance Falken FK-452 tires, which offer precise handling from five linear ribs and three-dimensional rounded blocks. Stiffer, wide steel belts offer greater tread rigidity, superior grip and high-speed stability, and high-tension carcass and high turn-up construction increase handling response and high-speed stability.

Other performance upgrades include:
  • Unique Mustang RTR 19x9.5-inch wheels
  • Ford Racing mufflers
  • Ford Racing handling pack (performance-tuned dampers, bars and springs)

Mustang RTR commands attention with unique styling that is highlighted by a chin spoiler with splitter and supports, rocker splitters, a rear diffuser and aluminum rear spoiler. A distinctive Mustang RTR stripe scheme adds more distinction. The interior showcases RTR-exclusive floor mats, shifter knob and emblems.

The package was designed and manufactured in partnership with Michigan-based Classic Design Concepts, which has a reputation for quality and style. The Mustang RTR package is available at select dealerships for the 2011 Mustang GT. A Mustang V-6 package will be available in late 2010. For more information on the Mustang RTR package, visit www.mustangrtr.com.

Taking the lead
The introduction of Mustang RTR also plays off the success Gittin is enjoying in Formula Drift, with a significant lead in the championship point standings. Driving the Monster Energy/ Falken Tire 2011 Ford Mustang GT, Gittin took first place at the opening competition in Long Beach, Calif., and most recently placed second at Road Atlanta.

QUOTE

"Vaughn's goal was to introduce an exciting new package to the Mustang world that resonates with both the younger audience and with traditional muscle car enthusiasts as well. Mustang RTR achieves that goal with ease and illustrates how universal Mustang's appeal is."
– Mickey Matus, Ford Performance Group marketing manager

And people say the Shelby costs too much?
I find this package pretty lame if it doesn't involve some serious weight reduction, since the real drift Mustang is mostly competitive because they slaughtered the weight.
Um this doesn't make sense. That's close to 8 grand added to the price of the car. Other companies are asking for more for the same modifications. Hell, Shelby is asking for tons for the base GT350 package without the good bits.

Unless you get to keep the take-off wheels, and other parts... $7K+ is a bit much for this.

The Kona blue with brighter blue highlighting stripes doesn't look too bad, though.

Better than the marshmallow blue peeps color of the SMS Mustang yesterday.

The white car has the nicer headlights and what seems to be the glass roof option.

The wheels look good, but look awfully like a lot of other aftermarket, and GT500's stock mesh wheels.

Exactly how is this something that I couldn't do in my own garage?

If I were going to buy a tuned mustang, I want it to have something that is beyond my workbench tool set's capabilities, and something I wouldn't mind paying someone to do... like fitting an aftermarket IRS under the rear end of that car.

I can do the wheels, and the air-filter, and a shift knob sort of stuff myself, without someone else's name and iconography all over the car.

Yes warranty. Yes factor in these mods to your financing. No they are not HREs.

And the cars in the pics are 2010 models. Same cars that were at SEMA, this is just the official release of the package, which can be ordered from some dealers directly.
warranty. Also those wheels are HRE forged mono block. Buying those alone would set you back $7k.

Thats a sexy ride....and I don't even like American cars!
There's nothing like the sound of V8...
...unfortunately Mr. Gittin does not think so we rather get to listen to some random music. :)
the front splitter is a bit big but that is an awsome car.
this package seems like a good compromise between the standard mustang and the crazy tuned ones out there. but for me ill stick with the standard since i dont really need all that extra stuff for a pretty good car to start
      • 4 Years Ago
Interesting, a carbon fiber RTR version "coming soon" for a mere $135k....
Perfect ride height and wheel size... overall very well done.

I just wish one tuner would come out with the perfect front end. I haven't seen one that is ideal just yet. The stock GT one is okay but not great. Most of the aftermarket ones are a bit F&F.
I'll take the wheels and the kit, but you can keep the graphics and the "tuning". I'd rather wait for a supercharger kit and do my own custom exhaust.
"K&N high-flow air filter, but combined with a Ford Racing ECU tune and a set of new mufflers, the breathing mods are good for an extra nine horsepower"

At first I though I read wrong... but nope. 9 HP? I really want to know what that tune was aimed to do.
Love it. Very well put together; however, the pricing seems a little high to me. I would assume that Ford is pricing this car/kit right between the Shelby and the Premium GT. The Shelby is $16K more than the Premium GT therefore, adding $7-8k splits the difference.

Does anyone know the company that manufactures the wheels for this car?
