A couple of years have passed now since the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) announced its search for a vehicle that would replace the taxis of New York City with something that better fits the times. The TLC created a website for creative types to submit ideas for the "Taxi of Tomorrow." One of the more interesting to come in over the last two years is something called the UniCab.

The groundwork for NYC's Taxi of Tomorrow is quite simple:
  • Meets highest safety standards
  • Superior passenger experience
  • Superior driver comfort and amenities
  • Appropriate purchase price and ongoing maintenance and repair costs
  • Smaller environmental footprint (lower emissions and improved fuel economy)
  • Smaller physical footprint (with more usable interior room)
  • Compliance with appropriate Americans with Disabilities Act requirements
  • Iconic design that will identify the new taxi with New York City
Born out of those guidelines, the UniCab looks nothing like a traditional taxi, aside from the yellow color. The UniCab features seating for four passengers, an automated ramp for those with disabilities, an infotainment center which displays intended routes and attractions along the way and outward sight lines that allow all of the passengers to get a great view of the glorious city of New York. Though nothing more than a design sketch right now, the UniCab could change our perception of taxis in the future and make hailing a cab the hip, green thing to do. Hat tip to Zelda!

Interesting concept. However, the exposed rear wheels are a disaster waiting to happen. Front and rear fender hits are a way of life in the city. I remember when the old Checkers had huge overirders on the bumpers to protect the car in the day to day combat that is NY traffic. To think i was once a bike messenger in my home town, now you couldn't pay me enough to ride a bike in NYC.

Unicab never worked since 85 billions years ago. Scientology killed everybody since 85 billions years ago.

I said to conceive and sell a green car( a piece of shit with 4 wheels that consume few energy $) for cash at a point of sale.

It'll be useful when your memory has been wiped and your enemies need to bundle you into it. Too bad about the inane answers to basic questions. Oh wait, that's a JohnnyCab...

I am interested to buy. Signed: Gorr.

The question is who and when someone will buy a cheap green car and see it, own it, use it, and stay with it and drive it. Don't show it to me and don't say im a spambot.

Like i said, im here to buy a simple car made mostly of metal that is better then a ordinary 2005 4 cylinders front-wheels drive car. As i don't like leaf, tesla, imiev and probably the chevrolet volt, then im continuing to put pressure on the 'ones' that slow down this process. The spambot false reputation is probably because some try to imitate me and don't use their own ideas. My main idea is to put tons and tons and tons of pressure on everyone with this simple idea: write in advance the simple product that i dream to see for sale near my town so i will go see it 5-10 minutes and probably offer less money and wait more time to see if some other cars might be better. As i don't work anymore, i have time to do so and i do so just for fun mainly, and really im not sure at all if i will change my 2005 4 cylinders car for another model before 2025.

Don't use vulgarity with me anymore and speak english.

You or someone logged in as you wrote "Unicab never worked since 85 billions years ago. Scientology killed everybody since 85 billions years ago." That resembles a spambot if I've ever seen one.

And why are you "here" to buy a car? This isn't a car-buying site. And this is an article about taxi prototypes... are you looking to buy a taxi?

Many people will call me a socialist for this - but....
I don't see why the feds don't have some competitive programs to aid small companies in industries where cost of entry is prohibitive.
This would increase competition and aid all of us.
Here is what I have in mind.

Hold a federal competition to design an efficient urban taxi of tomorrow.
The winner gets a cash prize, but must agree to license the design to be build by anyone for a certain fee per unit.
The feds then also pay to have the design tested for regulatory approval and it is shepherded through all such redtape and testing.
Then the design becomes available for any company to produce as long as its products test randomly to be up to the snuff of the design.

That creates competition for design outside large manufacturers.
It allows the public to gain a fast-track to actual use of modern, forward-thinking designs.
It allows individual manufacturer to increase profits based on managing production costs.
It allows municipalities the chance to buy truly modern products being produce in large scale to bring down prices.
It is a win, win, win for everyone involved.

The Aztek was ugly then, and it's ugly now. Why would they want to resurrect ugly?

The car in that picture looks like an ideal vehicle for wheelchair bound persons. Those ramps would allow easy loading.

The cash cab seats 6, has lights that flash when you get a question right, a screen for the video bonus question, and you win money.

Solution: make more cash cabs =P

How about we just order one of the new London (Black) Taxi designs, paint it yellow and call it a day.
