Audi A1 e-tron concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Audi will launch an all-new A2 in 2012, this is officially confirmed. Additional reports have started to slowly trickle in suggesting that the A2 will be, drum roll please, electric only. You can bet that we're excited about this and hopefully Audi will make an official announcement before the end of the year. For now, we're going with Autocar's report that cites, you guessed it, undisclosed sources stating that the A2 will be an electric competitor to BMW's Megacity that is coming in 2013.

Though we should probably just call this a rumor, there's quite a bit of info that suggests an electric-only A2 is a definite possibility. Audi has hinted that the new A2 could employ something similar to the range-extended EV setup found in the A1 e-tron concept or we could see a full battery-powered setup instead. Additionally, Audi chairman Rupert Stadler has been caught stating that electric drive is a company priority. We suspect that at least one of these rumors will turn out to be true, we'll have to wait to give the electric-only A2 the "officially, official" tag.

what Audi says and does are two different things

If it is electric-only, I hope they reduce the front grill to a minimum. It is just wrong to saddle an EV with the cooling capacity (and drag!) of an ICE...

      Sincerely, Neil

BMW made theirs into an active grill -- it can also be blocked off "permanently". Smooth is better -- it is a challenge their designers: come up with something that greatly improves aero drag, provides the air flow needed (for the passengers, if nothing else!) and still carries on the tradition of styling they have for their ICE cars.

        Sincerely, Neil

Neil...they cant change the front to much...its what their known for. You dont see BMW getting rid of their distinctive double kidney grille, do you...?

just a flat out lie. Audi says one thing to appease the green while doing another. various sites are reporting of an Audi R4 which was once the Audi e-tron except it will have a combustion engine and no electric drive whatsoever.

darkness still has a firm grip on Audi and I fully expect this to be another lie that will only be true by coincidence when peak oil hits and they actually wake up a little.
