Dodge has decided to pull the plug on the Caliber in the UK, a decision that has been downplayed quite a bit. As Dodge tries to quietly withdraw the compact car, we can't help but recall that the company was thrilled to introduce a new diesel engine for the Caliber in Europe less than a year ago. The engine brought high efficiency to the Caliber with a rating of 40.6 miles per gallon (U.S.) on the EU combined cycle, just what Brits who pay a lot more for fuel than we do should appreciate. Alas, they didn't. The company is also pulling the Nitro SUV from the land of the Union Jack.

So what's left in the UK bearing the Dodge logo? Well, with a compact car and a small SUV leaving, the Dodge Journey CUV now stands alone. Though Dodge did not say why it chose to pull the Caliber and the Nitro, modest sales would be the most likely culprit. With one remaining model, Dodge will have a hard time finding any success in the UK unless there are larger plans afoot with new partner Fiat.

The Caliber is a *compact* car? Really? It is pretty large compared to many cars in England -- maybe they didn't like the poor fuel mileage?

      Sincerely, Neil

I have never seen any Dodge in the UK!
But it looks like a pile of turd and probably handles just as badly.

If you want to sell cars in a new market you need to create a reason for someone to buy it.

Crysler are also here in the UK and struggle to sell any cars. If your car does nothing better than the competition it does not matter how cheap you sell it. If you sell your new car for £10,000, and it is £4000 cheaper than a Ford Focus, or £6000 cheaper than a VW golf but not better than either car at anything then I will buy a 1 year old Ford focus or a 2 year old VW golf if I only have £10,000 to spend and I want a small family car.

To break into the market you need a diferentiator. e.g Kia 7 year warranty.

I have heard more than one Brit comment on how ugly the Caliber is. Who was the genius that thought a small car should look like fuel sucking truck? There are lots of fuel efficient cars in the UK, so why buy one you think is ugly.

Dodge... In the UK?!!! Where? When? I've never seen any. ZERO press/promo/ads. No wonder no sales

I really wanted to like the Caliber. But it's just so damn ugly.

The CVT was terrible as well as the visibility from inside. I rented one for a trip a while back, and it ranks as one of the worst cars I've ever driven.

Same here. It was so bad, I returned to the car rental agency the next day, and convinced them to exchange it for a Corolla. A car has to be really bad to make me feel great about driving a Toyota Corolla!

I once kept a Kia Sportage for a grand total of two hours, before returning it. The guys at my local counter now understand I'm serious when I request a specific car.

Small 4-door sedan - has to have a trunk, not a hatch. I made an exception for an HHR once, and it was ok. But I only needed it to drive 20 miles total, so no big deal.
