For the third year in a row, Volkswagen brought a trio of natural gas-fueled Sciroccos to the 24 Hours of Nurburgring this past weekend. For the second year, the Scirocco GT24-CNG won the alternative fuel class taking the top three positions. The #117 car driven by Vanina Ickx (Belgium), Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar), Dieter Depping (Germany) and Klaus Niedzwiedz (Germany) finished 16th overall out of the 200 cars that started the race.
This year for the first time the VWs were running on methane produced from biomass and other regenerative raw materials. The well-to-wheel carbon emissions of the fuel are claimed to be up to 80 percent lower than gasoline. In addition to the class victory, Volkswagen was also awarded the FIA Alternative Energy Cup, which was presented for the first time this year. Volkswagen offers many of its models in Europe with natural gas capability.
