Audi RS5 Shooting Brake – Click above for high-res image gallery

We just spent the last few days bouncing around Germany driving the 2011 Audi TT and the powertrain-enhanced Q7 (review next week), and between bouts on the autobahn and a few factory tours, we pestered our hosts about some of their Euro-only products and what we can expect in the future.

We dropped a few not-so-subtle hints in an attempt to score some seat time in the RS6 (denied) and the TT RS (achieved, and yes, it's awesome), but the RS5 was something we were aching to drive. Unfortunately, we were short on time and didn't get a crack at the 450-hp coupe, but on more than one occasion we mentioned that a shooting brake version would be the bee's knees. As you'd expect, that's probably not gonna happen, but the rendering wizard Theophilus Chin has answered our prayers in digital form.

Chin, who mocked up the three-door for a Photoshop contest, took some inspiration from past Audi coupes – including the GT – to create a two-door fastback version of the RS5 that's loaded with win. The sloping roofline matches perfectly to the RS5's widened haunches, and while the roof rails wouldn't have been our first choice, we dig how they tie into the brushed aluminum front splitter, rear diffuser, side mirrors and five-spoke wheels. Too bad it probably won't happen, but there's a good chance those of us in the States will get a crack at the standard two-door RS5 in 2012.

Looks great, but Audi already has a A5 they can use to make that.

shunk would say its butt heavy
I'll say it's butt heavy, too.

Judging from the regular Accord coupe/5 series, this thing's going to make the current Subaru Outback look like a Mini...

what a humongous station wagon, probably could fit a pair of elephants in there.

Ugly. It'd be better in sportback style with 2-doors.

An A/S/RS5 Shooting Brake would definitely be my favorite of the range.

      I have a fetish for the A/S/RS5. I think I need a towel...

Looks phenomenal, but then again, I make no attempt to hide the fact that I think the A56/RS5 is one of the hottest cars on the road today, so not really surprised that a "shooting brake" version would look great.

Nooooo. If something is going to have the Ur quattro name, it's going to have a turbo 5 cyl.
Wow. Don't see a lot of true shooting brakes that size. Lovin it.

Do it before BMW makes a 6 series shooting brake. They love niche vehicles.
yeah, i get that, so still use the best looking bmw in a decade to base the car off of, make it three doors. if the conti gt has no problems looking resolved in three doors, that car certainly wont.

a six series shooting brake would look like crap, the rear's all chunky, front end very aged now... it'd be like a two door 5 gt.

        Theophilus,

Nice, looks like you should be doing C&D's BMW renders instead of this guy!

Zamafir, what are you talking about? We already know what the new 5-er is going to look like. The Gran Coupe is speculated to be wearing the new 6 series front end. It's getting a refresh soon. Camo'd versions have been running around for a while, but no naked shots.

Obviously, if BMW were going to make a 6 shooting brake, they would do it on the next one, not that there are even rumors of such things, but that is what I was suggesting. So why are you talking about a dated front?

And the rear is chunky??? What bearing does that have on making a shooting brake version? The rear would have to be changed altogether due to the hatch.

        2 door models are even numbers: z4, z8, 6 series, 8 series

        4 door models are odd numbers: 3, 5, 7

Why would a shooting brake come from a sedan? The 6 slots between the 5 and 7, so a model that size with 2 doors would be a......6.

I'm not trying to be derogatory, but your posts aren't making much sense this evening. You post a lot, I don't tend to disagree with your posts, but it is Friday night, I guess...drinking? You're usually on your game more than this, especially with Euro model cars.

Theo, love your work. Keep at it.

        6 series shooting brake? yuck!

new forthcoming 5 series (thinly veiled Gran Coupé) based shooting brake? oh... hell... yes!
Corner49: The 1-series comes in 3-, 5- and 2-door models. The hatch was a 3-door before there was ever a 5-door available. The 3-series also comes in a 2-door, and used to come in a 3-door variant, but that's been dropped, I guess since the 1-series was introduced. I think you're looking into the BMW nomenclature a little too much. Especially since the X6 is a five-door, not a two-door as your system would suggest.

        shooting brake = 3 doors
Well I did render the 5-Series Shooting Brake a couple of months back. If you are interested, you can see them here http://www.theophiluschin.com/?p=2056 .
