2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

The engineers in Stuttgart are hard at work prepping the next-generation SLK roadster, which should launch next year as a 2012 model. The smallest offering from Mercedes-Benz doesn't look all that far from being show-worthy either, which leads us to believe that the SLK could possibly make an appearance at the Paris Motor Show later this year.

Details on the new SLK are slim, but rumor has it that an all-new twin-turbocharged V6 is in the works for the AMG-badged roadster, producing somewhere in the area of 476 horsepower. That's pretty insane, especially considering that the current (and already potent) SLK55 AMG makes due with just 355 horses.

Obviously, the refreshed exterior design takes a lot of cues from the Big Daddy SLS AMG supercar, but new interior spy shots show that the updated cockpit will also be more akin to the Gullwing, as well. Note that the center stack features the Command head-unit integrated into the flat dash, with the radio and HVAC controls placed on a separate console below. We like what we see, especially since the current SLK interior is rather drab – not nearly as nice as what you'll find in the new BMW Z4.

Scroll through the gallery below to see new spy shots of the next-generation SLK from all angles.

It looks better than the z4 already, imo...

      Doesn't make sense to me...

I thought Mercedes was going to stop with the HP wars and focus on lightweight cars??

I would rather them get like 375hp out of it and loose 300-400lbs. (I know that's asking an awful lot but just wishful thinking)

Either way 476 is a lot of HP - prob lighter than a GTR because of awd/4seats so with that much boosted hp it would rival the GTR for speed.

This would clearly outpace a standard corvette. Standard corvette convertible pricing (with automatic top) and auto trans (a sin) is about $59k

SLK55 right now with the same base features runs about $68k.

Can Mercedes promise all this AND keep the price down? Audi gave us more for less with the new S4. Mercedes to follow??

Slap a Dodge logo on it and call it the new Viper.

I find it curious that Mecedes-Benz feels the need to make the SLK look like a knockoff of their current halo car. It's not a bad design (either one) but if I owned one it would irk me that they just designed it like that so owners could pretend they had a supercar.

The Camo they have on the outside make it look like a Z4, but I am digging the SLS dash.
Hopefully they keep the V8 in it.

So what we're going to get is a baby SLS, with a folding hardtop and no gullwing doors? I like!!

I would upgrade from my miata to this.

This looks pretty sweet, loving the new Mercedes range!

Uh no, the 599 is not the Enzo's successor.

Is it me or are cars no longer getting better looking? It's like they change change them now, but without much improvement to styling. I can't think of many cars (especially German and Japanese) where the models out now look better than the previous models. I will name examples

        1) Accord
        2) Camary
        3) Miata
        4) 4 Runner
        5) Sequioa
        6) Land Cruiser
        7) Lexus ES
        8) Lexus GS
        9) BMW 3 Series
        10) BMW 5 Series
        11) Audi A4
        12) Audi A6
        13) Infiniti G37 Coupe
        14) Infiniti FX
        15) Mazda 6
        16) Mazda 3
        17) Ferrari 458 (replacing 430)
        18) Ferrari 599 (replacing enzo... yes they consider the 599 the replacement)

        And the list goes on...

        @speed12sil

Well at least we agree on 9 of 18... That's 50% and since this is a "subjective" matter I can accept that. However, Ferarri officially considered the 599 the Enzo's successor. Look it up.

        @nastinupe

Um mind showing me where you got this info for the 599? The 599 is the successor to the 575M. The one and only reason why it's not the successor to the Enzo is because the 599 is front-engined.

Show me a mid-engined car that was replaced by a front-engined car. The Honda HSV-010 doesn't count for 2 reasons.

        1. It's a race car.
        2. Even if it was to go into production, it would only be filling a niche that Honda/Acura hasn't been in since 2006. The high end sports car market.

The funny thing is, is that I looked on Wiki just to see if that's where you read that info just so I could laugh at you, and even Wiki disagrees with you lol.

      476 hp that is rediculous

Well I'm sorry .. since Damiliar "input" on Chrysler interiors and exteriors .. that is all I see now.

The grill looks like a cousin of the Dodge family (Charger anyone?); and the interior looks like it came from the same studio as the PT Cruiser.

Used to look good, but SO much negative anchoring to their styling cues now.

Infinity-Nissan-Renault .. I feel SO sorry for you and your new partner.

      The retro-styled interior looks fantastic.

If they've made any changes to the exterior, they've hidden them well. The current SLK has always looked to me like someone took a first-gen SLK and pumped about 50 psi into it.
