While Ford is working on plenty of hybrid and electric vehicles, its big bet for meeting the new corporate average fuel economy standards is EcoBoost, and so far customers appear to like it. Since launching the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 last summer as an alternative to larger V8s, Ford has sold about 10,000 units of the Lincoln MKS and MKT along with the Ford Flex and Taurus SHO. A quality study by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, MI, indicates that early adopters are almost universally satisfied with the performance and operation of these engines.

The gasoline turbocharged direct injected EcoBoost engines are designed to replace larger displacement powerplants with smaller, lighter units that provide similar output with greater efficiency. We can't comment on the methodology of this particular study, but so far we have loved the EcoBoost engines that we've tried. Over the remainder of 2010, Ford will be rapidly expanding EcoBoost availability with the 3.5 going into the F150 and a 2.0-liter inline four going into the 2011 Edge and Explorer.

SURVEY: FORD ECOBOOST SATISFIES CUSTOMERS

* Lincoln buyers give the 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ V-6 engine some of the highest customer satisfaction scores ever for Lincoln
* Sales of EcoBoost engine-equipped vehicles continue to meet or exceed company expectations
* EcoBoost is attracting younger, more affluent buyers to Ford and Lincoln Mercury showrooms

DEARBORN, Mich., May 4, 2010 – Ford Motor Company's 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is not only bringing new, more affluent customers into Ford and Lincoln Mercury showrooms, it also is delivering some of the highest customer satisfaction scores for overall engine performance the company has ever seen.

"We are winning import buyers with EcoBoost," says Amy Marentic, Ford's North American group marketing manager for cars and crossovers. "Even better, this new customer is younger and more affluent."

Drivers of EcoBoost vehicles say they are more than satisfied with the overall performance of their engines, according to the Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study conducted by the RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

In rating their EcoBoost engines, 100 percent of Lincoln MKT buyers surveyed said they were satisfied with their engine's performance, including power and pickup.
Meanwhile, 99 percent said they were satisfied with their engine's overall operation. Ninety-one percent of Lincoln MKS buyers were satisfied with their engine's performance, while 94 percent were satisfied with their engine's overall operation.

The GQRS study is conducted on a quarterly basis with scores assessed from survey responses collected from owners of vehicles purchased within specific time frames. New vehicle owners are asked to report any defects or issues, as well as rate their satisfaction with vehicle quality on a scale of 1 to 10 across an array of vehicle systems and features – including EcoBoost engines.

A growing fan base
Since August, Ford has sold more than 10,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles in North America. EcoBoost is available on the 3.5-liter V-6 offered in the Ford Taurus SHO and Ford Flex and on Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT.

The EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 combines direct injection, variable valve timing and twin turbochargers to deliver the power of a V-8 with the fuel consumption of a V-6. That combination – of which Ford holds more than 125 patents – is expanding the appeal of Ford and Lincoln products, Marentic said.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is built at Ford's Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1. On Monday, Christina Romer, economic advisor to President Barack Obama, toured the plant with Ford officials.

Not only do consumers give EcoBoost high marks for performance, towing and overall operation, but demand for vehicles available with an EcoBoost engine continues to meet or exceed Ford's internal sales expectations, said Marentic.

For example, calendar year sales of the Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost are running at 50 percent – 25 percent higher than projected. Flex sales this year also are running higher than projected, too. Approximately 11 percent of Flex sales are with the EcoBoost engine, 3 percent higher than anticipated.

Last month at the Beijing Auto Show, Ford debuted the newest member of the EcoBoost family in the small Start concept. The Start's engine is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder that delivers the performance of a 1.6-liter four.

In Europe, the first four-cylinder EcoBoost engines are just now being launched.
The four-cylinder EcoBoost engine makes its North American debut late this year in the next-generation Explorer SUV and Edge crossover. Those vehicles will be available with an optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that is expected to deliver the performance of a V-6 but with best-in-class fuel economy.

By 2013, Ford plans to offer an EcoBoost engine in as much as 90 percent of its North American nameplates, which would deliver global sales of 1.5 million EcoBoost vehicles per year.

"We're committed to delivering this technology to multiple vehicles so that more and more customers can take advantage of EcoBoost's unique, no-compromise combination of power, performance and fuel economy."

      Where did all the V8 guys come from?

      It was the V8 guys on the Mustang team that actually got the 4 cylinder off the future options list too. V6s get better mileage in the real world but the difference between a v6 and v8 in terms of Fuel Economy is less than a 4 cylinder. Divide 8 by 6 and you get 1.33, divide 6 by 4 and you get 1.5. When the difference is that small the driving style is usually the biggest factor. A v6 has a higher maximum MPG while a v8 has a lower maximum MPG it can reach. Just like HP. It depends individually upon packaging and driving style.

      I know the Fordstories website actually had a Poll. with v8 vs v6 vs EcoboostV6 vs 4 cylinder. The results were something like 22% for V8, 9% for V6, 37% for EcoboostV6, and 30% for 4cylinders.

      Ecoboost is different than just turbocharging or direction injection. It's a packaging. Ford tried the SVO Mustang in the 80's with their new ECU design. The SVO was more powerful AND faster than the 5.0 but was the most expensive. Bigger engines are cheaper for the same HP as a smaller engine but the fuel economy depends on the gearing and how the engine is designed. The 4 bangers Ecoboosts are the most interesting if only because they can spit out 200-300BHP in a lightweight package.

      I'd take a hardworking 4 cylinder over a lazy v8.

      The "Boost meaning less engine life" isn't an issue with Direct Injection, they build these engine to sustain almost Diesel like pressure ratings. Although Premium grade is better for Ecoboost engines,

      give me the new 5.0L over their ecoboot V6 anyday

      the sound is enough to make up for any fuel cost penalties or initial buy in

      the ecoboost won't eb so easy to maintain after about !25k miles when the turbo needs to be replaced. most of the time that will be those 2nd and 3rd buyer that will deal with it, but one the word is out they will all look to buy one with a replaced turbo

      I just looked at an A4 (for my niece) with the 1.8T and the dealer said hte turbo needs replacing, but it';s for sale as is. so I told him to keep it. She ended up with a Milan and is very happy with it

        Haha. If you don't do anything stupid to your turbo, it should last you hundreds of thousands of miles.

        If that Audi weren't abused, the turbo would have been replaced under warranty

        So long as they are properly oiled and not overboosted, they don't have that high a failure rate.

        Because that amount of awesome let unleashed on the world would rip a hole in the fabric of space itself.

        Oh wait the street legal 2000+ hp Ford GT did that when it ran a standing mile at 267 mph with its 5.4L Twin Turbo running at 41 PSI. :P

        It was my under standing that they can't fit the pipes in the current engine bay. Which is why the GT500 has the old mill with a lighter block. There's always the 2015 mustang! :D

      I don't understand what the big deal is with 'ecoboost' engines. Its a marketing thing for a basic idea...the minor fuel economy improvements vs a newer v8 is nothing to write home about but for the manufacturers every mpg gained on the highway epa ratings helps them out.

      Yeah I'd be pleased too if I was driving a ecoboost with 350hp/350 lbft after upgrading from my crown vic with a V8 and 240hp. Is it just old people buying this or what? Its not that special, i'd rather have the new 5.0 v8 than an ecoboost...

        The ecoboost gives you a wider flatter torque curve than even a modern a V8 with some increase in mpg.

        I think the real buzz is going to happen when they start putting little ecoboost engines in moderate to small cars. More usable power and better mpg.

        Yea, it's marketing buzz, but it has something to back up the buzz.

        It shows Ford has a direction...

        No, they didn't invent the car, but they took the lead on mass producing it.

        No, they didn't invent turbocharging and direct injection, but they are taking the lead on putting it into a wide range of vehicles, including a light truck (about time).


        It's like Audi saying they build technology boxes on wheels, or Lexus saying they build a crapload of hybrids.

        At least you know what you're going to get with a company that has focus.

        I am continually amazed it took 'em this long to realize "turbocharging is awesome". Just ask my 1987 Volvo 740 that 1. produced more power and similar torque at 2.3 L compared with Ford's V6 at 3.8 L, and 2. wiped the floor with the Taurus on gas mileage.

        For crying out loud, that was 23 years ago!!

      EcoBoost is all marketing hype after the gas crunch a few years back. The Ford twin turbo V6 was supposed to be called TwinForce. Now that's a cool name.

      The V6 EcoBoost engine does not get better gas mileage than a modern V8. Then engine was originally intended for power, and not fuel economy. Ford is actually benefiting from having underpowered cars during the gas crunch. People mistook Ford's underpowered cars, as specifically being made that way to be fuel efficient. In reality, Ford was trying to catch up to the power of other automakers, and then didn't have to after the gas prices went sky high.

      Ford lucked out, and now they are the new media darlings.

      I'll say it once and I'll say it again. Why build a 3.5 liter V6 when you can build a 3.5 liter V8? The eight cylinder will be just as efficient and sound LOADS better to the enthusiast. Not to mention that any savings made from having less pistons are negated because the engine has no three cylinder "brother".

      You could share heads, valvetrain and timing chains between a 1.8 liter four and a 3.5 liter eight (not to mention design costs) and built both engines in the same plant. Oh, and because of the smaller surface inside the cylinders surrounded by more metal in the block, you'll also be able to up the PSI on the turbo version.

      Personally, I just don't get it.

        Ummm, the third gen SHO had a 3.4 liter V8 and it was a total dog.

        TANSTAAFL. With more cylinders you get more internal friction (all other things being equal) since you have more bearings and more pistons sliding in more liners. Add to that the higher costs of assembly and more difficulty in packaging and you'll see why mainstream car makers are building 2.5l 4-cylinders instead of 2.5l V6s, 3.5l V6s instead of 3.5l V8s, etc.

        Night Flight: Don't blame the V8 design in the third gen SHO, blame the automatic it was saddled behind, the heavy-ish car it was latched to, and the front wheel drive that restricted it's power. Back in the 90's it wasn't wise to put more than 230-240hp in a front driver because of the massive torque steer. There were ways around it, but Ford apparently didn't apply it to the SHO. Which, is in no way the fault of the engine.

        I understand the technical reasons behind going V6, but I'd miss a proper V8. These are the last decades of the internal combustion engine. The least we can do is let it go out with a bang.

        It's more like it maintains gas mileage but you get about 90 more horsepower and a high, flat torque curve over the base V-6.

      The 5.0L V8 that resides in the new 2011 Mustang GT is really nice! If you new anything about this engine you would not be talking about the possibility of switching it out for the EcoBoost V6. That would be sad, very sad.

      The EcoBoost engines may have some merit but I think it’s more hype then anything.

        The V8 proponents of the Mustang group, won this round. They got the Ecoboost Mustang held back............ probably until next year. They did not want their new V8 to be outshadowed by a turbo V6 Mustang.

        Word is, expect 425-450hp. Expect performance that is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 5.0, due to power curve. Supposedly, all while getting better mileage.

        Expect initial Ecoboost Mustangs to be a special edition (to guage response).
