Audi Sportback Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

The Audi A7 Sportback isn't even on the market yet and already there's word afoot of a 580-horsepower RS version.

The four-door coupe/hatchback/thing, previewed in concept form at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, is set to be unveiled in final production guise at the upcoming Paris salon in September. And when it does, reports suggest that it'll be capped by a top-of-the-line RS7 packing Ingolstadt's V10 engine, sans turbos, with 580 horses galloping through all four wheels, seven speeds and two clutches. Other engines will include six or eight cylinders, burning either gasoline or diesel.

The A7 is set to debut a new mid-size platform for Audi that's expected to underpin the next-generation A6 as well, but in a form targeted directly at the likes of the next Mercedes CLS, also tipped to debut in Paris.

I want to like this car but I just don't. The Rapide is the benchmark for how sleek a car can be.
no, it's the epitome. if it was the benchmark, the minimum level others needed to meet, it wouldn't be an aston, it'd be a lexus.

So whats the difference between the a7 and a8? I just don't see a huge market audience for this move, other than the fact that wagons are becoming popularized again. Or at least until the soccer moms get a hold of them and all the cool kids are back in SUVs
        • 4 Years Ago
massive market audience actually. the big difference is the a7 is elegent and the a8 is a brick. the a8 will continue to cater to the organic a8 buyer while the a7 will be used for conquest sales.

I don't know what it is about Audis, but besides the A5 and R8, none of their designs do much for me. I think they're handsome, but just not extraordinary (though that may be the point).

yup, understated elegance, less gawdy than a merc, less disparate than the new crop of bimmer models (the pointless ones, at least the new 5 series seems to be getting it again, 3 series is sexy as hell in coupe form lf course).

Another RS model? RS = next AMG, nothing special
        • 4 Years Ago
AMG is nothing special? Have I missed the part where they stopped making 500+ HP V8 & V12 beasts?
Uprated AMG models are nothing more than the super soft base model with gobs of horsepower.

Long periods of face melting acceleration are only enjoyable if they are followed by braking that will suck the tears out of your eyes and turns that put your neck out of alignment.

      Yummy, want it.
I wouldnt want to mess with it thats for sure, its going to be Fast as hell. Mercedes, BMW watch out.
I think the BMW's 4 door coupe version is a lot better looking.
you think the 5seriesgt is better looking? have you seen one?!
I agree and I can't say that I'm feeling that 'chrometastic' grill the car is sporting. I'd say it works for a Caddy but not an Audi.
Wait til September, Then let us know
Not a bad looking car. I just wish Audi could get rid of that
wide style Edsel grill and go back to their 2 piece design.
Finally(!) . . . a really good-looking Audi. Even one that makes a Mercedes look bland.
      OMG TOO MANY MODELS
I think they've got about 13 more to go to reach their 40 model goal. given their sales are on an unrelenting upward swing, I think they're onto something :)
Probably no coincidence that the RS7 and the Forte have similar headlight designs (does this make the RS7 a Civic-clone?).

Aside from the grill, a nice design from Audi (definitely more sleek and aggressive than their usual designs - same applies to the BMW Gran Coupe concept).
