Ford announced today that Azure Dynamics will be setting up a final assembly facility Europe to supply the continent with the Transit Connect Electric starting in late summer 2011. In early March, Ford announced that the battery-powered van will be available in Europe next year following its North American launch later in 2010.
Ford will be shipping Transit Connect gliders (vehicles without a powertrain) from its factory in Kocaeli, Turkey to Azure facilities where the electric drive system, power electronics and batteries will be installed. Azure will be opening a facility in Michigan this year. Azure will also establish a network of dealers in Europe to handle sales of the TC Electric with service handled through the regular Ford dealer network. The Focus Electric will join the Transit Connect in Europe in 2012 but no pricing has been announced for either vehicle yet.
