250 mph Underground Racing Lamborghini – Click above to watch the video after the jump

The Texas Mile sounds like a totally kick ass event. You get one mile on flat, straight airport runway to go as fast as possible, with a half mile to bring your vehicle to a halt. This year's big winner was Richard Holt; the lucky owner of a fire-breathing, street legal twin turbo Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. The 1,000 horsepower super bull turned in an official time of 250.1 miles per hour, or fast enough to make even the most ardent of speed demons a bit leery. To make matters a bit more interesting, Holt drove his twin-turbo Gallardo for the first time ever during his first run on the track.

Hit the jump to watch Holt's pavement-scorching run. If you thought the Gallardo Superleggera looks fast standing still, wait to you see it passing the 250 mark. And Holt reportedly managed his Texas Mile record breaking run with the air conditioning on and the radio blasting. We can't think of a much better Sunday afternoon.

He could have breached 260 had he lost some weight. No joke. Every pound of weight takes a lot of power to propel at the top end.
        Certainly weight is a factor.

However, at those speeds, weight is nothing compared to drag. You know... the whole square of speed thing :)

      Parachute

      Spins

      250.1

      Indeed.

Maybe someone can answer this one WTF was on the back of it?
        Jiffypop.

I am no expert, but it kind of looked like a parachute pack. Maybe he wasn't sure of being able to slow down in time with brakes alone...
I thought the same thing but then I realized it wasnt hooked up like any parachute, it looks like some sort of exhaust return which makes zero sense but it still dosnt look like a parachute either.

      1. On the back of the car is a drag chute attached to the frame underneath the car so it doesn't rip off the bumper. Used incase of emergency.

      2. The A/C and Radio were on while he waited at the starting line not during the actual mile run, unlike the other race cars that are stripped of all that equipment to reduce weight.

      3. The intent was to hit 250 in an otherwise stock Gallardo that was fitted with a twin-turbo system built by Underground Racing to produce 1700 AWD HP. It's not a stripped drag race or road race car and it will be used as a street-legal car.

      4. Richard Holt is a professional business man and experienced drag racer. He has both brains and guts.

      5. That car has a lot of power and the ground had tons of gravel. There was not enough space at the end of the mile to stop at 250 mph so he slammed the brakes and didn't want to pull the chute to be more of a stock ride.

I'm pretty sure that car is making more than 1000hp,

Impressive. Nice to see something other than a Toyota Supra win one of these events.

Hahaha i thought i was the only one!!! I guess the Rice Cookers on steroids needs a little more of the dosage ha. Its the difference between a decent engine with upgrades and a top of the line with upgrades. Its like putting make-up on my sister and then putting make-up on Beyonce lollol haha. "Supras suck gas fumes that is of a UR lambo...
why didn't he use his parachute?? or is that just for show....
For when the engine hits 2,000 hp.
i'd be somewhat concerned that this thing just starts spinning when they hit the brakes. the veyron sure as hell didn't do that when slowing down

Awww :-( do we have a Veyron fan whos just found out The Little Engine That Could REALLY CAN! READ!!! He was at the end of the mile. I can promise you the Veyron driver wouldnt have tried to push it that far and prob would have slowed down right at 230/240 if that to get a leisure deceleration. 50 miles from 300 at the end of a mile on a strip a little more than a mile without the parachute. BRAVO UR Lambos, glad to know I can stop after beating the crap out of the Veyron and Rice Cookers on steroids (Supras).

So much more appealing than a Veyron....

      Do want.
Was doing a story on the Ford GT that went 266.9 not appealing enough?
Agreed. Like the Gallardo much more than the Veyron.

Front end looks a little light...lucky he didn't fly.

OTOH, maybe it's just preloaded or heavyduty front springs to make up for aero-loaded droop at high speed.

What was the stuff hanging on the back of the lambo??? Engine cooling gear perhaps?
        @Saheed

It's a parachute! You know what? I don't think my Clio needs one of those...
Don't get me wrong... the Ford GT is nice (especially when twincharged) - I just find the Lambo to be a bit more to my liking.
        vag FTW!

        Had to be said, really.
      I assume it's a drag 'chute...
