Porsche has just announced that it is filling out the remainder of its Panamera lineup with the addition of a V6-powered model that will be available with either rear- or all-wheel-drive. Starting price for the RWD V6 Panamera will be $74,400 while the AWD Panamera 4 will begin at $78,900 (plus destination).

Wondering how that compares with the V8-powered Panamera S? Let's look at some numbers. The 3.6-liter V6 puts out 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is a decrease of an even hundred horses and 74 lb-ft from the 4.8-liter V8. Each buyer will have to decide for themselves whether those hundred extra ponies are worth a $15,400 surcharge.

Porsche's seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) dual-clutch transmission will be standard equipment in the V6 Panamera, along with such necessities as an electric moonroof, power liftgate and the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with navigation.

According to Porsche, the V6 puts 66 fewer pounds over the front axle, resulting in an overall weight of 3,880 pounds. Auto Stop/Start technology ought to help the V6 Panamera eke a few more miles from each gallon of gasoline, and though official EPA numbers are not yet available Porsche says the car will not be subject to a gas guzzler tax. New Porsche Panamera Models Debut This Week in Beijing, China

The Panamera and Panamera 4 with an all-new, 300-horsepower Porsche V6 go on sale in June

ATLANTA - April 22, 2010 - Porsche officially unveils its 300-horsepower V6 Panamera and Panamera 4 on April 23rd at Beijing Motor Show, just 600 miles away and one year after Porsche's historic Panamera S, 4S and Turbo debut in Shanghai in 2009.

The Panamera and Panamera 4 will be available in U.S. Porsche dealerships in June 2010 with MSRPs of $74,400 and $78,900, respectively (excluding destination).

These new entry level Gran Turismos both feature a 3.6-liter V6 with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) developing 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This all-new Porsche engine is built on the same line as the normally aspirated and twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 engines found in the Panamera S, 4S and Turbo.

The Panamera transmits its power to the road via the rear wheels, while the Panamera 4 comes standard with active all-wheel drive. U.S. models will include Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), Porsche's new and revolutionary seven-speed double-clutch gearbox, as standard equipment.

Other standard equipment includes an electric moonroof and power liftgate, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with navigation, Bi-Xenon™ headlights, Bluetooth® telephone connectivity, and the universal audio interface to connect an external audio source such as an iPod or a USB stick with the PCM system.

Like every Porsche, the Panamera and Panamera 4 were developed according to the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy -- more performance on less fuel, increased efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. Equipped with the PDK gearbox and the Auto Start Stop function, Porsche expects these new models to be considerably more fuel efficient than their normally aspirated V8 siblings. Official U.S. EPA fuel economy figures will be announced closer to the new models' on-sale date, and like the V8 Panamera models, neither will be subject to a gas-guzzler tax. Both meet the strict EU5 emission standard in Europe and the LEV standard in the United States.

Porsche has always focused on superior efficiency and performance, and in the case of these new Panamera models these long-held tenets are not mutually exclusive. One example of this ideal combination of qualities is consistent lightweight construction with the axles, doors, hood, front fenders and tailgate all made of aluminum. Likewise, the brand new 90-degree angle V6 powerplant built at Porsche's engine plant in Zuffenhausen is approximately 66 lbs. lighter than the Porsche V8 in the Panamera S and 4S. This contributes to the low overall curb weight, which in the case of the Panamera with the PDK transmission is just 3,880 lbs. (1,730 kg).

Like the proven V8 models, both the Panamera and the Panamera 4, as genuine Gran Turismos, combine a sporting character with a high standard of comfort and everyday driving qualities. Steel suspension is standard, and variable dampers and adaptive air suspension with additional air volume on demand are optional. This provides a wide range of suspension qualities and features, with a high level of motoring comfort on the one hand and extremely sporting driving dynamics on the other.

Since its U.S. introduction in October 2009, the Panamera has received numerous awards and recognition. The Panamera Turbo was named Playboy Magazine's 2010 Car of the Year. Others include an Edmunds Inside Line Editors' Most Wanted Award, inclusion in Edmunds.com's Top Recommended Vehicles list, two Car and Driver Editors Choice Awards (Sports Sedans and Luxury Sedans), Bloomberg Car of the Year, the Most Inspired Design award in Ward's Auto Interior of the Year competition, About.com Cars Best New Cars of 2010, and NADAguides.com's Car of the Month for January.

      So basically with this things is comparable to a 2005 Volvo S60R, except that it is worse looking, has a way better transmission, and somehow costs more than twice as much? ... fail.

      I know Porsche is aiming this at the 'sporting family' or whatever, and when it has a "big" v8 to power it thats one thing, but really, that is base 911 money, is anyone going to turn down the entry level 911 for this this less powerful, uglier, heavier car?

      The pricing just makes no sense to me, the v6 should be 60k

      Ugh! Now *ahem* those people will start purchasing this car. How am I supposed to attract gold-diggers if Porsche becomes synonymous with "living beyond one's means?"

      All joking aside, would the V6 midsize sedans hang with this thing in a straight line? I know acceleration does not a sports car make, but stoplight races gain the favor of trashy women... which is the point of this car right? (Provided one doesn't particularly enjoy driving?)

      As car guys though, we see 70k and Porsche and think "pristine, older 911 turbo and trailer and a tow vehicle and a roll cage and some nice slicks"

        If it depreciates like a Cayenne, he's dead on. I just checked KBB. Porsche resale only seems to hold for 911s. You can get a Boxster for under 15, and Cayenne for under 20, and I've seen 944s for under 2.

        At least, I'm really hoping these things depreciate. I've seen a few Panameras around here, and in person they look beautiful. Photos don't do it justice. I want the V8, though. If I wanted a 300hp V6, I'd buy a Camaro.

        Yes, the V-6 is $74,400 - but in 4 years, you'll be able to buy it for $30,000 - buy it used, put a Garrett turbocharger on it for $6,000, and you've got a four-seater Porsche that can kick rocks in the face of a Corvette - for half the price of a new Vette or Porsche!

        Porsche isn't stupid. If you can buy a base Panamera, then swap the supercharger pulley and be as fast as the V8, who is going to buy the V8? (and figuring out how to make the supercharged engine work here. In Audi applications the air enters from the rear of the engine, so either the supercharger drive would need to be at the rear-possibly tapping the chain drive, or the drive and air inlet would need to be at the front-ala GM 6.2 V8 s/c)

        Because this is a 90 degree V6, whereas the VR6 is an inline 6, granted it is a staggered inline engine.
        So, how many degrees would the VR6 need to be canted to fit under the hood, 40-50 degrees.

      Curious to see the fuel economy ratings. I see some merit to the smaller engine if it returns over 20/30 instead of the 16/24 rating of the RWD S model. Sure the acceleration will lag, but the handling will be there along with the gorgeous interior. Though in reality I bet the fuel economy will only be marginally better and this is just an attempt to grab more sales. Either way, I cannot blame Porsche for trying. (Also still waiting on EPA ratings for the 740i/iL.)
