Renntech SL65 Black Series dyno run – Click above to watch video after the jump

Two swallows does not a summer make, but this is the second recently tuned SL65 AMG Black Series to say hello to the world – and that's more news on the car than we've had since the car's debut. Accomplished Mercedes-Benz tuner Renntech has played around with it, coming up with a hardtop coupe that shoots out 865 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet at the crank. That's 135 more ponies and 263 more lb-ft. than the stock SL65 Black, and a crucial 5 more horsepower than the Brabus Vanish, perfect for your interdimensional travel needs.

The Renntech version gets an ECU revision, upgraded intercooler pumps and sport mufflers in a package that begins at $16,390. That doesn't include the transmission upgrade and LSD you'll probably want to go along with it. And not that there's much to see from 1,000 horses roped in place, but if the sounds turn you on, follow the jump for the video and the press release.

Wow. That car sounds very tame...

Isn't a transmission upgrade a necessity? I thought the "stock" engine's torque was limited in order to stop the "stock" transmission from disintegrating.

I saw two "regular" SL65 AMG Black series at the Newport Beach dealer a few weeks ago. That car means business. Even next to SLRs Roadsters (the dealer had a couple as well), it has some presence!
I really should have taken some pictures...how often do you see SLRs and SL Black Series together? If I remember right, the dealer also had a few Maybachs in the background ;-)

Am I the only one confused? The title and video title say 805 HP, the article says at first "a hardtop coupe that shoots out 865 horsepower...", and then later "And not that there's much to see from 1,000 horses roped in place...".

You do also say though that it has 135 more than stock (which is 670) and 5 more than the brabus (which has 800), so I think you mean 805, right?

What's a hundred horsepower among friends, eh?
Good idea. 'Cause you know how Mercedes are already so capable at putting down their power.

805hp...at the wheels or motor? Not too familiar with tech stuff.
It is 651hp at the pavement, they are using a large fudge factor to get 805hp.

I just can't get my head around Mercedes competing at this price point. A purchase like this is more emotion than pure numbers on paper, and I guess the hard-core Benz fan now has yet another vehicle to aspire to. But this is Ferrari/Aston/Lamborghini territory, and I would think if you have this kind of money to drop then the only Benz you're going to consider is an S-class for a daily driver.

Aston, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, are all all on a different, higher level. This a car built for those in Suburbia, whose neighbor took home an SL55, and you say, hell with keeping up with the Jones' I want to be better, thus you take delivery of some silly Benz like this here. While you will never drive it harder or faster then the neighbors 55, mathematically, you car is superior, and thus you feel superior. This as many haven't reported, is not nearly as much of a drivers car than the aforementioned brands, just a numbers car.

I guess it will be same as this one.
