Mini's talking Mission Control system – Click above to watch video after the jump

We're hoping Mini knows a lot of things that we don't, because we don't understand – like, at all – how a brand with a Swiss bank account full of hip could have done something so awfully, terribly unhip. We're talking about Mission Control, which "evaluates a vast range of vehicle, driving situation and vehicle environment-related signals and supplies the driver with relevant information and instructions in customary MINI style."

Car and Driver drove one of the Mini 50 Camden Editions on which the system debuted, and it sounds like "customary Mini style" is another way of saying "OMG WTF?" Follow the jump to hear it. And someone, anyone – please let us know what this is about. Hat tip to Scott!

It seems to be real. You can blame Florian Reuter the Mission Control Product Manager.

Blame him for what? Trying to hard, or worst idea ever???

So, driving one of these is like sitting through a constant Mini Advertisement in Hell? And they want people to pay $5K extra for this? I mean, it's cute, but this kind of cute belongs in one of those electric Barbie cars you get for your kids, not on a $25K+ automobile for adults.

      :-O

I'd drive the MINI into a wall if it had that startup sequence audio every time, or every time I did anything.
I'd be yelling F YOU! at this stupid thing all the time.

I might snap if I got stuck in a traffic jam with the car talking to me like that... Like doing a dancing around the car naked pouring gas on it and lighting it up type of thing... Well, maybe not, but that seems seriously annoying.

Actually, I believe the repartee went something like "a door is a jar." Which never failed to sound completely insane.

I'm a cross border commuter, and my car always tells me "you just crossed the border" every frickin day twice - which is really annoying - and CAN'T be turned off. sooo but... if it'd act like this, i'd shoot the speakers....

I would so go after that thing with a bat... It seems like "Mission Control" was designed for the 5-year old kid car market.

You know 1 voice might have been slightly tolerable especially if I could choose just the female voice. My car does not need to carry on audible conversations with itself especially cheesey " let's mini!" ones.

is there a way to get it drunk?

mini: most ruined car of the past 200 years.

from 1959 to 2006, it was an excellent car in every way. from 2007 onward, i haven't seen a single productive thing come out of the company at all. i own and daily-drive a mini (from before 2007), and i hope to see mini fail as a company as soon as possible, because they're an embarrassment to me as an owner of one of their products.

i also hope to see BMW fail as a company for allowing mini to self-destruct in this way, and because BMW's product portfolio doesn't have a single great car in it.

I'm on my second Mini, a Clubman S, and apart from a few quibbles (stupid HVAC controls, etc), I absolutely love the cars. But this? Gah! I like my cars to have some personality to them, but not one that TALKS TO ME. Especially in such annoyingly chipper tones. It's like reinforcing every negative perception everyone has about the brand. What's next? Will BMW's start coming standard with an inflated sense of entitlement?

I can only hope this piece of stupidity can be turned off.

And stupid ideas like this is just driving me away from looking at buying another MINI when it's time to move on from my current one.
