Ford Sync makes friends with an Apple iPad – Click above to watch video after the jump

Sure, you can install an iPad in your instrument panel if that's your thing, but what if you want to keep it mobile and use the system you already paid to have in your car? In that case, Ford's SYNC won't let you down, a fact that is anything other than surprising. Pairing an iPad through SYNC with Bluetooth audio, you can get your Pandora on behind the wheel. You can't do voice commands yet, but that's coming, as you'll hear repeatedly in the video after the jump. Now about that mobile WiFi...

My uncle has SYNC in his new MKS ecoboost. Sync completely locks up an A2DP bluetooth device and makes it unuseable besides for streaming audio.

For plugging it in USB, its fine...the car recognizes it as an iPod and tries to charge it. Problem is, the iPad uses more energy than a 5W USB can feed it. Therefore, it runs down the battery the longer you use it.

Funny, I've done Bluetooth streaming to Sync with my Blackberry 8320 (which uses the A2DP protocol) , and didn't lose one bit of device functionality. Still took calls and loaded maps/directions just fine.

There may be something wrong with the device you were trying to use.

Sounds like Ford still has their ear to the ground and is trying to keep up with trends. Good Job Ford!!! ----agreed
innovations like this is very popular I think!

Why would anybody want one of these cumbersome things anyway. I saw a fellow in starbucks the other day trying to carry it (show off) and flavor his coffee...real hassle believe me. No I'll stick with my Iphone and hope for improvements, tucking it into my pocket when not in use and be happy without being nervous someone will walk off with it

My question is: why would you want to? Cell phones are much more portable than the iPad and streaming music from just about any bluetooth enabled phone to SYNC is simple.
Yeh I'm not at all convinced on the need for an iPad to start with, let alone go to extra hassle is you have something else already that works fine

I'm pretty sure these guys work for Jalopnik. If so, its funny how you used youtube as your reference and not them.

"All their software is also crap which adds insult to injury"
~ yet Apple has no experience with software?

Hmmmmm, I think my Logic Pro equipped recording studio would like to have a few words with you.

I'm also pretty sure Apple makes operating systems among other software, last time I checked. Some of Windows 7's most weakly implemented ideas are bad rip offs of Apple's OSX features/programs. Enjoy them. Steve Jobs says, "you're welcome."

I'm also going to guess from your screen name that you have no creative use for a speedy 9"x7" multi-touch screen? You must be quite an inventive application developer, iPad...

        @ ipadsucks..

Ok there troll... Are you retarded or just plain stupid?

Apple makes lots of software. Do you live under a rock? Ever heard of OS X? Who wrote the software on the iPad and the iPhone? Did just appear out of the sky? To say that Apple has zero experience in software just makes you look like an ignorant idiot troll.

Make sure you know what your talking about before you post. It makes you look less stupid.
Uh, apple isnt a software company. Ford sync is based off of Windows Auto, which microsoft has licensed to ford and kia. Apple doesnt even license ANY software to any company, and they have zero experience in software. All their software is also crap which adds insult to injury

Well I remember when it was and I'm sure still is against the law to have a viewable tv screen for the driver. Why on earth would this be any different? I'll admit have at a long stop light texted, with the car in park then I put it down.

I dont' know alot about the iphone , nor of course the ipad, haven't seen it in action. I know my blackberry can play pandora, look up stuff on the web, and text, or recieve email and write all at once.

But I don't do that in the car!!!! I try to keep it away from me , and turned off, but the one comment made me laugh more stuff to touch while driving

Pretty cool. You could use the iPads voice commands to control the music, unless the iPad doesn't have that feature..
It's more likely that you'd be using SYNC's voice commands to select tracks on the iPad.

yay for more distractions in a vehicle.

People will soon run out of fingers to touch things with. How will they molest the screen of the satnav, iPad, AND their iphone?
So? Don't judge a book by its cover. It's still in development stage.
