2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG – Click above for high-res image gallery

Mercedes-Benz trotted out the SLS AMG GT3 and E350 4Matic Wagon here in New York, and along with the racy supercoupe and bangin' wagon, it's announced pricing for its all-new, homegrown gullwing.

We don't have an official MSRP breakdown yet, but our man on the floor tells us that the 2011 SLS AMG will start at $183,000 in the U.S. when it begins to go on sale this summer. That entry-level price is noticeably lower than expected, but we're sure once you tack on the options (custom color, carbon ceramic stoppers, etc.), it's sure to head quickly north of $200k. This car looks really cool...and its unique because its a super car that doesnt look like the classic super car wedge...obviously everyone wont like it but I do

Now the $183k price tag just makes my opinion useless because guys like me always say "I waould rather have 3..."

      Mmmmm, GORGEOUS!
The SLS is an instant classic. With the even higher performance 6.2L, this thing is going to be a beast.

I thought for sure that Mercedes would price it at $200k which would make it more exclusive. At a $183,000 base, it is a relative bargain.

I'm gonna have to agree with Izzy on this one. This forum has fallen in love with this car, and frankly, I can't see why. Especially not at that price tag.

I honestly haven't ever liked the modern Mercs and i have never wanted to have one. I really haven't

But they nailed the looks of todays 300S. It's beatifull car and something that i really really want.

@Tool: This price really drives home their target competitors. They want to lure away Porsche and Aston Martin drivers and they're giving those drivers little reason to argue. That's an aggressive price.

just what your ordinary NBA/NFL players wants to be seen in.
I spy with my little eye a LOT of upskirts in this car...

I agree it is beautiful, but where the hell would you park it?! where I live we dont have street parking and it just wouldnt work here. I would love to see the delorian come back but as I said in my area its not practical. it would work for show I guess. I saw a person in a honda civic that put suicide doors on it and it was sweet. but that would work since they open up. not out.

Has the biggest brakes I've ever seen.
How do you get in/out when someone is parked next to you?

And what about getting in/out in your garage (especially if you own two of these and both arrive/leave at the same time)?

Guys never hold the door for a girl anymore, so it does give them an excuse now.

Of course, the Viper ACRX will tear it a new one.
Wacky doors? Time for this writer to do some automotive histrory lessons. Never mind the fact you will NEVER dent the guy next to you or get stuck parking to close.

There are many other cars that have a 'wow' factor starting with the R8. If you want a beauty then Aston Martin Vantage, or Ferrari California Spyder is the call for the day.

I think that Merc missed the mark on styling starting with the hideous c-pillar. And finally the rear end is a copy of the 1997-1999 Acura CL...what is Benz thinking.

A real sports car comes with a manual gearbox even if it is an option.

I am a Benz owner and lover but this car leaves me scratching my head and thinking that Audi really hit the mark for the halo car

      I'll take a V10 R8. Thanks.
I'd have to be in order to spend $200k on that thing. It's ugly and it's premium priced. Now maybe if I was making a Back to the Future remake...
The R8 is the kind of car that looks great on first inspection but its attractiveness wanes rather quickly over time. The SLS on the other hand looks indifferent on first glance but its beauty slowly erodes through the defences of your soul till you're forced to appreciate its design - well that and the sound of its engine which pummels as hard as the heart of the enthusiast who hears it

        Audi over this ??

        Your crazy.
That's nice. People who will be buying this car, PROBABLY already have an R8 anyways. Just an FYI...
        @ Razgreez

I agree. The R8 design is nothing that will last. This on the other hand has charater, defintion and dont forget the old gull wing which give this car meaning then the R8

IMHO......the R8 is just a sport coupe (like the Merc SL). The R8 isnt even all new from the ground up because it shares it engine from the RS4 and Lambo. Just money for Audi to put in its pocket.

I'd take this anyday over the R8.

I haven't been brainwashed by Audi commercials. In fact, I never even seen any of them. I'm just basing it on looks, which of course, can be subjective.
I do agree that this car is a bit on the ugly side. However, It has coolness that the R8 can"t match. You would be considered cool, being seen in this car. It also helps that this exhaust note is amazing. Yes the R8 looks good, but my rule of thumb is that your car shouldn't look twice as good as you do (since it looks twice as good as brad pitt, then this rule applies for most people).

        @Slobra2k3

Clearly you're a sucker for Audi's overly aggressive marketing campaigns.

        Also, Deloreans are awesome!

      GULL WING DOORS ARE WACKY???
Once again AOL has an idiot to write the link. "Latest Benz Has Wacky Doors"? Wacky doors? Is the person writing the links so young that they've never heard of or seen gullwing doors? Maybe they literally know nothing about cars? Gullwing doors are an absolute classic for Mercedes.
I love it, except for the price tag. I once owned a 1956 Mercedes 500 SLR that had similar doors while stationed in Germany. Yes, it was a screamer also with only a straight 6 engine. My Benz saw the 240 KPH on many trips on the Auto Bahn from Darmsadt to Frankfurt Germany.

Just doesn't grab my attention, much like everything else in Toyota's lineup
        • 5 Years Ago
