Mercedes-Benz C-Class spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Our spy photographers have just snapped these shots of the next Mercedes-Benz C-Class undergoing winter testing, and these latest shots give us the clearest look yet at the entry-level luxury sedan's updated front and rear. The baby Benz should make its official debut later this year, and these photos clearly show that we can expect some mild yet substantive alterations to their appearance.

So, what's new? Up front, a new front fascia integrates LED daytime running lamps – something that's becoming standard fare on the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup. From there, we see slightly revised headlamps, what appears to be a more upright grille and a new hood. Out back, there's a modified rear bumper and revised LED taillights.

Our spies also suggest that minor interior and mechanical updates could be present in the new C-Class. We aren't expecting giant leaps from the already very good current car, but squeezing a few more miles-per-gallon out of the Merc's mill probably isn't out of the question.

Wasn't MB supposed to use a Pentastar variant in the future, or at least move to 60 degree V6's? (although I prefer the sound of a balance-shaft DOHC 90 degree myself)

I think somewhere in a recent Motor Trend they said MB is coming out with new 6 and 8 cylinder engine families this year. The C350 has the lowest output against the competitors (G37, S4, 335, CTS 3.6, IS350). No one stays last in this industry for long, so its entirely possible a new engine could make its way into this facelift.

      Looks like an Accord

It looks like they are not going to fix the giant panel gaps around the hood and front fenders. Pity.

Doesn't look much different than the current model. This is probably just a dev mule.

@nicholi - QFT, best exterior on a C class in generations!

The main reason so many EU-based cars are getting a refresh all of a sudden is because the EC has introduced dedicated daytime running lights starting for 2011 models.

Most EU manufacturers find LEDs to be the most practical way to implement this as it uses only 10% of the power of regular headlamps (standard DRLs where main beam are lit at low intensity use 25-30%) and therefore not impact on fuel efficiency or reduce the life of the headlights.

It was in anticipation of this new directive that Audi and others started introducing LED running lights a couple years ago.

Also there are strict requirements, most importantly that a car must never be mistaken for a motorbike (which have have headlamp-based DRLs for many years already here).

As far as I'm concerned, the current C-class is awesome. I don't think they need a refresh at all.

i agree w. nicholi - the current one looks amazing! .. the best part according to me is the aggressive lower facia in the current one ...this new one has a happy look - which really isnt working for this car as per the spy shots -- there r two versions of the C one w. a neutral face and one w. aggressive look --- the lower facia matters ALOT on this particular car cuz the neutral look on C is absolutely terrible ... but thats just my 2 cents..each w. their own opinions

Why mess with perfection, leave it as is. But then again, Merc always makes these small yet noticeable changes to most of their cars before the next generation comes.

Looks pretty much identical to the current model... hard to judge without camo. Also, these aren't quite "spy" shots, in the last one someone in the car is looking directly at the camera through the driver's-side mirror and the car is obviously parked with the wheel turned in the middle of the road (where the photographer seems to be standing)...

how do we know its a benz??? the logo is covered???

      sarcasm off/

Yes there will be new engines according to reports.

A 3.5L V6 (most likely Direct-Injected) as the base and a smaller displacement V6 with twin turbos for the higher end model to compete with the 335i. Should be very exciting.

I'm convinced the SLS was a mistake. It's too good looking to fit in with the otherwise fugly design language the rest of the line has taken on, especially the C-class. The SL had it right, but they went and killed it with the new front end that suffers the same problem as the sedans. There's no flow. The proportions are wrong. Pieces seem disjointed, like it was Frankenstein'd from the parts bin. A far cry from the understated beauties that Bruno Sacco's team used to churn out like clockwork.

omg finally someone with the same thought process as me! merc is just all over the place lately. good-looking angularity with some real flow is demonstrated in cars like the new camaro or lambos. new mercs just don't have that kind of presence.

Wow...you sure dodged a bullet there, Mercedes(!) We would've never figured out that this is MAYBE a Mercedes Benz, especially since some sharp thinker put a black disc in place of the star in the grille. I wish I could work for Mercedes and figure out how to hide new models from anyone ever figuring out they are Mercedes Benz'

Isn't M-B going to begin to assemble the C-Class in Alabama to reduce costs due to the high Euro?
My guess is that they are going to try giving all the cars in the M-B lineup at least a little bit of SLS design cues. (specifically in the headlight treatment and the grill area)

.... so basically the already ugly C-class is going to get even uglier in my opinion.

I miss the M-B designs from +/-5 years ago. :(

they better not add the humps on the headlights like the sl has
