Volvo V70 – Click above for high-res image gallery

We've just seen the 2011 Volvo S60 in all its production glory, and hot on the heels of that, we've got some snaps of the wagon version undergoing winter testing. Volvo's array of offerings have always included wagons. Safe, stolid Swedish Estates are a big part of what built the brand, and that's why the V50, V70 and XC70 are rockin' the two-box in Volvo's current lineup.

Since the V70 moved up to share the S80's underpinnings, there's been a midsize-wagon shaped hole in Göteborg's showrooms. Sure, the V50 is there on the compact end of the spectrum, but it's often not quite big enough. The V60 snapped in these photos aims to change all that. Targeted directly at Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Touring, and likely carrying all the wily charms the Volvo has been showing off lately, Volvo's latest estate looks to be capable of heating up even a Nordic winter.

So does this mean that the V60 will be based off of the S60? How will this work if the S60, S80, V60, and V70 (and XC70) are all going to be based off of the Ford/Volvo EUCD platform?

maybe...finally...a replacement for the 240! hope they put that 4banger diesel in it,
or a lean burn 35mpg gas engine. they need to do something like this asap.

no way! a 240 successor should never be FWD and should never have a rounded corner!

ok i'll cut some slack on FWD thing, but it better last 500k miles.

i was thinking 240 in size, utility, concept and intent. fwd, rounded corners not as critical -
don't think they should do a "retro" design. but this v60 does seems to have the 240 shoulders and square back.

i consider the spirit of 240 its durability and simplicity. newer volvos might have some of the former but definitely nothing the latter.

"Targeted directly at Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Touring"

That seems a bit low to aim, given that the V50 already has more cargo space than either.

Pfft, they OBVIOUSLY weren't paying attention to Autoblog's Ice Racing series.... they got that drift ALL WRONG.

It looks very puffy. I am not sure I like it in black either.

You know the safety mavens at Volvo. For the next gen they've gone and covered the entire exterior with an airbag.
