Click above to watch the video after the jump

We love a good drag race as much as the next guy, especially when the two vehicles are relatively evenly matched. The four-cylinder 2011 Hyundai Sonata and 2010 Toyota Camry sedans appear to be of similar might, as both vehicles are family haulers aimed at the heart of the midsize market. But do we want the two vehicles to drag race to see which one has the best burst off the line?

Apparently someone thought we did, as evidenced by the post-jump video featuring the upstart 2011 Sonata 2.4 GDI against the title-holding 2.5-liter Camry going head-to-head in the battle of four-pot supremacy. We're not sure who created the video but it could have been created by an Asian market arm of Hyundai, so you can guess who wins this sprint to the finish line. That said, the Camry fares pretty well off the line where some would argue a midsize sedan needs power the most. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself, and while you're on the other side, head over to Comments and tell us which two closely matched production vehicles you'd like to see in a drag race.

Paid cash for a new 2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited V6 ($18,500) plus tax and the dealer garbage. To me it was throwaway car for my wife. She loves this car. Vehicle now has over 10,000 miles and NO problems. I personally don't know of any $18,500 car that can come close to this Hyundai for value. Appearance is totally subjective. When Honda and Toyota cars first came to the American market they were junk. (I know, I was there). Mercedes Benz in the fifties were junk. I know because I used to pick them up in New York from Hoffman the Mercedes distributor at the time. All the first Mercedes and Honda's in this country were prone to destructive rust problems. Lord knows how many thousands of fenders Honda replaced. I am the last person in this world that ever thought they would own a Hyundai. Now I own one, and I will buy one of those new 2011 Sonata Limiteds when they are available.
P.S. I have absolutely no affiliation with Hyundai, or any Hyundai dealer.

Hyundai wants to be Toyota so bad!
They are having "Wet dreams' day and night

Nobody cares who's 4-cylinder family sedan is fastest!
With almost 20% more HP, it should be a lot faster

      But who cares?
Nobody buys a family sedan to go fast!
Get a V6 if you want speed
(4 out of 5 family sedans bought are 4-cylinder)
        Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.....good for you!
Sonata is not only faster but also More fuel efficient than camry.
Their comparing the old camry to a newer car..... How nice.

Wonder wheres the Sport V6 Camry ? lol Oh yea....Hyundai would have lost that race....hell they almost lost this one! lmao
      • 5 Years Ago
Well then...all the characters in the video are all Korean. HMMMM I WONDER WHO PROBABLY MADE THIS ADVERTISEMENT? I'm sure Hyundai was happy to see their new car spank the camry in a drag race, but i wonder if aero played a factor here. One way or the other...this is definitely an unlikely drag race, and one most buyers of either car will generally overlook. Good job Hyundai on the further development but i really just don't care.
yep i hear you dude, and dont know bout your country but her in nz, hyundai is an expensive daewoo or kia. Resale is as good as the computer im typing on.
10 year old camry is still around $9000 10 yr old sonata bout $2k and a free set of steak knives.
But true who really cares aye
Of course a 10 year old Hyundai isn't worth anything, 10 years ago Hyundais wasn't builidng competitive cars.

At Carmax a 2006 Camry LE with 45K is around $14,000.

An equivalent 2006 Accord is around $14,500.

The comparable 2006 Sonata is $11,000.

Which match up pretty well with the price difference when they were originally sold.

would like to see toyota sienna vs odyssey
        • 5 Years Ago
How about Sienna vs Sedona vs Odyssey vs a Chrysler/VW van with the 4.0? It'll be the battle of the ages, lol
        • 5 Years Ago
Chrysler just changed the 62te axle ratio to the taller, for better mileage.
        It will also lose.

I'd like so see the Sedona with the new 6 speed automatic, either with the 3.5 lambda2 V6, or updated 3.8 (3.3 v6 for short wheelbase?)

Dodge needs a supercharged direct injection 2.0 I4
Chrysler needs a turbocharged direct injection 2.4 I4
VW needs a twincharged [direct injection] 1.8 I4
and a double clutch transmission to go with those engines.
Edmunds just did that and the Sienna beat the Odyssey by a second to 60 and two seconds to 75. Not that minivan drivers care.

        Honda's J V6 with VCM remains a dog.

You want to see the Odyssey lose?

Where is the 6 speed auto and 3.7 V6?
Sonata beats the Camry on looks. I really don't care about drag race between the two. Sonata is a better value than the Camry.

And you can actually stop a Sonata if you so desire.
People keep crying about how they raced the least powerful Camry, well that's the least powerful Sonata, as a 240 HP 2.0 Turbo version is coming and then the 275 HP 2.4 Turbo. All 4 cylinders. Camry's Ancient Tech using V6s to get 4cyl power is NO MATCH TO THE HYUNDAI!!!!

We dont want to be Toyota,we want to be superior than Toyota. We want to take Affordable Asian cars, out of their Eco Box prison, while providing affordable Luxury to the masses. Hyundai wants to be like a Korean Chyrsler on its "family cars", but with cars that will actually work everyday, look nice, and are fuel efficient. They want to be a Korean Benz with the Genesis product.

      An "Aspirational Brand"

      1. Aspirational for the company as it tries to become a legitmate upmarket brand.
      2. Aspirational for the Customers, as they get cars that are as well put together and thought out as a Merc, but are priced close to a Chrysler or Toyota. Cars that feel and look like Luxury cars, are arent priced as such.
        Hyundai would grow much faster
(they have many years of growth before they can mess with Toyota)
If they read their history books

The "Affordable Luxury" angle didn't work for Nissan 20 years ago
It didn't work for VW 10 years ago
        And it won't work now
People don't switch brands based on getting luxury features cheap

You have to earn respect, and build a quality brand image
Hyundai has many years of brand-building to go
        That only comes with time
        Word-of-mouth advertising
This will take 5-10 more years

        They don't want to wait
        But that's too bad
        LOL beat Toyota?

Build a Car that beats the IS-F or even LFA. Wait build a better luxuruy car then the LS600hL. Build a better off-road car then the LandCruiser....

How about you try to better yourself first before you chase after a crown thats outta reach.
Not that I would ever be caught dead in either of these cars but the Hyundai, aside from the front end, looks much nicer than that p.o.s. Camry. That being said, the Hyundai looks as though it's been in a front end accident.
Have you seen one in person?

I can only say that the curves and the lines are so advanced that cameras simply can't do it justice. I was very skeptical when I first saw pictures, too. But I was a believer when I saw it in person... and got in it and drove it. It's a cool car in a pool of boring vanilla cars in the segment.
I have not seen one in person but I'll be on the look out now. That Camry just looks shameful!
I'm surprised that the Camry pulled ahead at first. Hyundai must be using wider gears or something..
The Hyundai's gearing is taller off the line, due to close ratio gearset Hyundai is using.
        Hyundai close ratio 6 speed auto: 4.212, 2.637, 1.8, 1.386, 1, 0.772 against
        4.65, 2.831, 1.842, 1.386, 1, 0.772

I'd rather change that, then compromise the mileage with an axle ratio change. 2.89 to 3.195
        • 5 Years Ago
Even considering the fact that Hyundai produced this, they just showed their car in a negative light! The Toyota pulling ahead so vastly from a full stop is what the average joe schmoe wants: power off the line.

I agree that we'll have to see what happens with the US spec car.
But it looks like the Toyota has impressive good gusto, considering that it's lacking Direct Injection.
Yeah whoever produced this is a moron...the 0-60 time of the Camry is only 8 seconds but it takes the Sonata 13 seconds to catch up to the Camry?! Yeah because people shopping for family sedans should care primarily about the 60-120 time of their car on a track apparently long enough to make sure that the Sonata would at least look like it won something.
So unless you drive a lot in non-stop straight lines from 0-120mph I don't see how the Sonata would *ever* be faster in real life.
tekdemon: no, raw 0-60 times is not what people are generally looking for, but it is nice to know that a 4 cylinder car that gets good gas mileage doesn't skimp on the power. That's long been the complaint about economy cars. 8 seconds from 0-60 is not bad for a family hauler at all!
Who can really tell who's ahead, with the camera angle being what it is? Of course this is a Hyundai production, for the Sonata Korean microsite (sonata.hyundai.com). With the Korean Sonata slogan at the end and the driver wearing Kia and Hyundai badges, was there any real doubt on AB's part? There's a shorter teaser TV commercial on Youtube, too. It doesn't show the whole race, but parts of it are filmed from a different angle and in it, the Sonata's in the lead at first, then the Camry pulls ahead for only a brief moment before the Sonata starts to again overtake it. I'll be waiting on a test of a U.S. spec car before making any real comparisons against Camry or anything else.
OWNED!!! Toyota is so passe'. The styling boldness of the Hyundai alone blows the Toyo away. The only people I know who buy a Camry are old people who don't know anything about cars. They simply want an appliance whose interior light comes on when the door is opened...like a fridge or an oven. I love Hondas but their styling is so disgusting, I can't even bear to look at them on the road. Plus, Hondas are waaay too expensive. My next car is a Hyundai for sure.
You say you love Hondas...but can't bare to look at them and you think they are too expensive....doesn't make sense. So what you meant to say is...you DON'T like Honda.
TRD V6 Sport Camry for me. Black Leather, loaded with TRD lowerings springs,TRD exhaust,TRD Intake and 18 inch TRD rims. Oh yea....30 % tint all around.

So smooth. I Love the Camry.
Also....IMO I think Hyundia designed this car off the Camry because from a distance the cars look exact....when will Hyundai learn...

Also...who drag races the LEAST powerful engine avavbile ? lmao

Nice try Hyundai. Im sure the 2012 Camry will destroy this wanna be. It was a Accord/Camry copy from the start and will remain that. Until you come up with your own ideas and own design I will continue not caring about your cars.
"Also....IMO I think Hyundia designed this car off the Camry because from a distance the cars look exact...."
        >> Seriously, You should go to hospital. Nobody think like that. Again, Camry-like looking is a insult.
        Ulgy accord/camry copy?
it is a inuslt to sonata.
Last Generation Outgoing Sonata had more power and luxury features than Camry, but its a shame people with their Obvious Anti Hyundai Bias didnt notice.
