Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso lap Valencia in the 2010 Scuderia Ferrari F10 – Click above for high-res image gallery

We know, we know. The pace set on track tests doesn't necessarily indicate how a given team, car or driver will perform in an actual race, let alone across a whole season. But it's hard not to read too much into it when we've been waiting for a sign since the end of last season, when the winningest team in all of motorsports – which has been working on this car since the middle of a dismal last season – with its veteran driver recovered from injury, and with a two-time World Champion taking the helm for the first time, when all these elements come together and the team absolutely dominates.

Half of the F1 teams that'll be competing for honors this season descended on Valencia for three days of official testing. And when all was said and done, Ferrari had dominated the time sheets on each of the three days. The first two days saw Felipe Massa run the new car, setting the fastest times on both days. Then Alonso took his turn on Day 3, beating Massa's time and everyone else's in the process – including returning seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher in the new Mercedes and reigning champion Jenson Button in the new McLaren.

For his part, Alonso was quick to quell speculation. Reliability, fuel loads, yadda yadda yadda. But when this is the first and only indication we have of how the season is shaping up, we can't help but sit back and stroke our five o'clock shadows in contemplation. We invite you to do the same while viewing the mega gallery of on-track images below.

I would say let's get to Jerez and get the new Red Bull cars in there before too much speculating occurs. It will be interesting to see what Newey has come up with for this year.

I'm hoping Ferrari's pace is real but it's still too early to tell yet.

I absolutely have to watch F1 this year!!

      1) Mad Max is gone.
      2) That cheater Briatore is gone.
      3) Michael's back.
      4) All Brits vs all Germans (McLaren + Lewis + Jensen vs Mercedes + Michael + Rosberg).
      5) Last but not least, a very likely Alonso Massa spat!!
        It's Herr.
It'll be a great season, although I doubt there will be the same inter-team fighting as there was with McLaren. Alonso know's how fast Massa is, and he's been with the team for years.

Where as with McLaren, he was the double world champion with a rookie teammate, of course he thought it was going to be his team.

I'm not saying it justifies it, but there are differences.

One cheater out, another one back in.

        Cough Heir Schumacher Cough Cough
      • 5 Years Ago
are they really going with that prick on top of the car for cameras/antennae?
I think it would be the coolest thing ever to see Kobiashi win a race.
Felipe Massa is a douche bag. Go Schumacher and Alonso
        • 5 Years Ago
He is still a better driver than you.
"fbrunckhorst" you're the only douchebag here...
        . . . you're pretty alone here mister 'rfbrunckhorst'.
That "douchbag" is responsible for giving Alonso a dream of a car to test & top the time sheets. From Alonso himself:

"...I had a good base in the car thanks to Felipe's job during the first two days. I think it was a really, really big help for me because I didn't lose time with the set-up or the car. I just concentrated on my comfort in the car because Felipe's set-up was good enough to keep running in the morning... It was a good first day, but also because I found the car very easy to drive because Felipe was running for two days and I've been taking this information from him which was a help..."
You seem confused. Perhaps it is you, in fact, who is the douche bag? Please advise.
I'm just glad that he's able to race again after his accident.
rfbrunckhorst: Still haven't made that appointment I recommended for you the other day, eh doucheface? Someone needs a timeout and a nappynap from the Interwebznet.
i like that Ferrari and Mercedes cars don't have that ugly fin on the back.
the "fin" on the back of the air intake isn't new at all, several teams employed it and dropped it during the last couple seasons..the advantage probably isn't that great if you have a good car shape in the first place.
I won't be surprised if later this season, both Ferrari and Mercedes add it on.
This ought to be a fantastic season. Seems Ferrari has really stepped up since last year. That being said it should be interesting to see what Adrian Newey has come up with for the RB6 at the next test session.

On another note I hope that Massa and Alonso coexist well for Ferrari's sake. Especially since they have built such a fast car.
Perhaps I should clarify. Felipe gets to drive these wonderful ferrari's and he has to fake a smile for the camera's. Hmmmm I know I wouldn't have to do that so that is why I look at him as an ungrateful douche bag. You have to be spoiled as hell to do that crap. You guys can go on loving him but he is definetly a little beeyotch. Go Schumacher, woop that panzi's a$$. At least Schumacher will appreciate the cars he drives.

It is just testing, still, you have to wonder what the bean counters at BMW is thinking with Kobayashi and De la Rosa sitting at 3rd and 4th in their Saubers... and not that far behind either.
I am hugely impressed with Kobs speed. I can't wait to see what unfolds this season. I always want Lewis to win but I'd like to see the Sauber team up there.
Waaaaaay to early to be making predictions, but Ferrari look very fast & very reliable so far. I haven't pieced together the whole picture of day three yet, but day 2 saw Felipe set his fastest time (1:11.722) on the 1st lap of an 11 lap stint. This doesn't necessarily mean the Ferrari only had 11 laps of fuel on board, but that could very well be the case... as could be the same with anyone else's lap times with regards to fuel loads & length of runs. Best times from the rest of the runners:

      Kobayashi @ Sauber: 1:12.056 on lap 4 of 8
      Kubica @ Renault: 1:12.426 on lap 2 of 3
      Rosberg @ Mercedes: 1:12.899 on lap 5 of 6
      Hamilton @ McLaren: 1:12.256 on lap 4 of 20

What this tells me for sure is that the McLaren was definitely heavy when Lewis set his best so it's not silly to assume there's a whole lot more in the MP4-25. It could also explain comments by Ross Brawn saying Lewis was definitely quick, and Stefano Domenicali remarking in an interview that "...someone wants to play hide and seek..." None of this means anything concrete, & this is all just speculation coming from me, but I think McLaren have something up their sleeves... and it ain't really a party until we see what old Adrian has cooked up over @ Red Bull. In the meantime, I'll see if I can find out the details of day three... I've got nothing better to do today. :)
More to add: Ross Brawn has admitted to having balance problems on the Merc, as well as them cracking exhaust manifolds every 150-200km. Alonso's best on day 3 was set on lap 4 of 12, but the Ferrari looks extremely well balanced and reliable: on one 16 lap run, be started in the 1:13s and got quicker every lap, eventually ending up in the 1.11s. Williams hasn't been particularly quick, but they've put the most miles on their car. It would appear they're taking it easy, & you can hardly blame them since the Cosworth mill is brand new. Sauber looks fast, but suspiciously haven't made any long runs... running on fumes to try & attract sponsors? You decide. Renault... nothing interesting to report. They look slow. & Toro Rosso has been plagued by reliability issues the whole test. Not surprising either, since this is the first time they've actually built their own car.

It's gonna be a helluva season... so happy F1 is back!

Can anyone tell me what the pillar on top of the camera box/roll bar is or is for? Any details on it at all would be helpful... can't find any info what so ever.
I believe it is a structure for pressure taps. One could come up with the pressure profile in that region using the pressure measurements along the structure. There are what appear to be a couple of pitot probes on the top of it we well. They may be confirming their CFD/wind tunnel results and/or learning the effect of the wake from the car in front.
So THIS is the car Alonso will park in the pitbox to prevent his teammate from qualifying.
