2011 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupe – Click above for high-res image gallery

It's been nearly four years since the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class underwent a major overhaul, so M-B is planning a few subtle improvements to the third-generation W216 model before an all-new S-Class coupe arrives on the scene in late 2014.

The new coupe will continue to be available in a variety of variants, but our spy shooters weathering the wintery climes have caught what they believe to be the 604-horsepower twin-turbocharged V12 version wearing a slightly modified fascia adorned with a single chrome slat, enlarged logo, LED daytime driving lamps and a new front bumper and splitter mildly reminiscent of the SLS AMG.

When the refreshed model debuts either next month at the Geneva Motor Show or later this year in Paris don't expect any seriously substantive tweaks to be made to the powertrain. That'll likely come in the next few years when Mercedes begins downsizing and turbocharging, and we expect the S-Class coupe to be one of the first models to benefit from the new mill.

      I agree with BigDumbFace to some extent. The CL doesn't photograph well and looks just awful on the Benz website configurator. This car is stunning in person and here in the northeast, a rare treat when you see one. The all wheel drive on the "base" model is a little unusual, but then it is necessary both to compete with the Bentley Continental and go wine trailing and skiing in upstate New York in the nasty winters they get up there.

      this refreshed S class coupe needs LED tailights similar to S class sedan and no more bucktooth looking quad exhaust. Needs to have E63 style quad pipes

        Believe it or not, there is a method to the Mercedes moniker madness. CL would probably stand for "Coupé" and "Luxus" (luxury), whereas SL would be "sportlich" (sporty) and "Luxus." Throw in a K and you've got "kurz" (short). As you can tell, the CLK is shorter than the CL, the SLK is shorter than the SL, and the GLK is shorter than the GL. (G stands for "Gelaendewagen" (offroad vehicle) btw.

        Back to the real topic, why they are changing it to S, I don't know, but in this case it will stand for "sonder" or "special," just like the sedan. This is probably to cut down on the perceived amount of models they have.

        You know I never understood the names for the coupes. If the CL is the S-class coupe, then what is the SL coupe? I genuinely want to know. And why couldn't MB just name the coupes C-class coupe, E-class coupe, S-class coupe, etc.? Just sayin'

        They SHOULD NOT be changing the name mid-model.


        Reminds me of domestic insecurity with things like the Taurus Ford 500/Freestyle debacle.

        Like the E-Class/CLK-Class, the coupe version is going to be renamed.

        So this is the CL-Class revised and renamed. Personally I'm for it. It makes the lineup easier to understand.

        If Mercedes Benz desides to make an S-class coupe... I AM SO BUYING ONE to replace my 2007 S550.

        Its a brilliant idea.

        I really don't think the CL550 sold anywhere near as well as the Sclass did since the CL was $20,000 more than the S550 (base) and was so much smaller inside.

        THIS IS EXCITING and I can't wait to replace mine.

        By the way - alot of people talk badly about Benz quality. The current Benz cars are fantastic and I've had very little trouble out of mine for the past 4 years.

        I prefer the old school moniker of SEC, although the E is pretty much superfluous now, as they all use fuel injection ("einspritzung").

        Mercedes still doesn't have a good looking rear end, especially on the coupes, but these big coupes sure do make you feel special.

      I liked the idea of the CL, but it always looked kinda funny.

      Hopefully this one looks good when finished, and has improved handling.

      If auto motor und sport isn't lying this coming facelift of the CL/S-Class Coupe should already be the first application for the new twin turbo V8s..

      a 4.6l with 435 hp and 700 Nm (515 lb-ft) and a 5.5l with 544 hp and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) if I'm not mistaken... should be fun.

      I'm hoping the V12'll get a modest update as well then?
