Lincoln Concept C - Click above for high-res image gallery

According to Automobile Magazine, Ford is putting Mercury on its list. Sorry, we couldn't help ourselves. Specifically, the list in question contains the names of 10 vehicles the Blue Oval plans to build off its global compact car platform. Mercury will supposedly be getting one of the new C-segment vehicles based on the architecture used for the recently unveiled 2012 Ford Focus, which also shares its guts with the Ford C-Max and Grand C-Max MPVs.

Says Lincoln-Mercury spokesman Mark Schirmer, "Certainly, one [variant of the global compact car architecture] will be a Mercury... It'll give us something to put into showrooms, and help energize the Mercury brand." We're glad to hear that, as the Mercury brand is in some serious need of rejuvenation.

Best guesses for what form the new compact Mercury for 2012 might take range from a slightly upmarket version of the Ford Focus (we certainly hope it'd be more than just a shoddy badge-job) or something along the lines of the Lincoln Concept C from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. If it's going to be one or the other, we cast our official vote for the latter. We'll see.

Have a Ford Focus RS re-badged and re-styled as a Mercury! And only sell it in that form in North America.
A bit of exclusivity, new age Mercury...you know...more fun. Make it a niche product line up.
Then, bring a RWD platform (from Down Under, the Falcon ?), and make it into a mouth watering coupe called the Cougar! or even revive the name Capri.

Then take the Ford Mondeo.......re-style it with a hybrid Eco boost 4 cylinder. calling it the Mercury One...

Now that could be a good product line up. No ?

"According to Automobile"? How about "According to Ford"; this was announced in July (http://www.thecarconnection.com/marty-blog/1015839_fords-big-plan-boosts-explorer-focus). The only change is that the car's been delayed to 2011 (along with the Focus). And, given how late the announcement was made (given the rumors of Mercury's demise at the time), I'm expecting a shoddy badge job...

      Ugly and pointless

I don't see the point of Mercury... A total of 4 cars in their lineup, 3 of which you can get as a Ford, and the other a dinosaur of a car. They need to dump Merc and focus on Lincoln.

Agreed. Big time.Mercury has alway's been Ford's "me too" brand and just doesn't seem to have a future. Why drag this out?

There's no way it will just be a cheap re-badge. Ford has been making too many of the right moves these days and taking extra pains to make sure their different brands have very distinct, even when shared, models (see Flex/MKT). I expect most everything you can see and touch will be quite different from the Focus.

Like the Concept C but not the grille. Wouldn't think that I would look to Mercury to to clean up a Lincoln nose.
They could call it the "Mercury - Not A Whale". LOL

Focus with leather? I love what Ford has done with its product line but the Mercury re-badging is just a waste of time.

Hasn't Mercury been more appealing recently to the ladies? Maybe Ford will push that angle.
Ford for the boys, Mercury for the girls, and Lincoln for the more affluent and more.

I have a feeling it's gonna be a winner. This isn't the old Ford people. Go Mercury!

lincolns should only be luxury sedans. mercury should be upscale fords, like they were in the beginning. Concept C would be more credible as a merc. i like the suicide drs & especially the digital dash. dials are so 20th century!
