The movie Cars 2 is slated for release in Summer 2011, and that means that Hollywood CGI types are busy sketching, rendering and compositing. Production artwork (seen above) found in Disney's annual report, has Lightning McQueen running in Japan ahead of what we'd imagine is a Formula 1 car. The plot has McQueen dashing around the world with Mater to win the Race of Champions. Mater gets confused for a top spy, and we can only hope that will be much funnier in Pixar's hands than Larry the Cable Guy's last outing as a government operative.

Has anyone ever noticed that the Pizza Planet "Toyota" Pickup from "Toy Story" is in every Pixar movie?

The only one I have not found it in is "The Incredibles"

By Hollywood CGI types you mean Emeryville CGI types. Pixar is located in Emeryville and doesn't outsource their work.

I also find it amusing that we get our first glimpse of Cars 2 with a hand-drawn frame when the movie is all CGI.

That's normal. Concept work is created to narrow down how characters look, how the environment looks, etc long before anybody touches a computer. Did you really think they just jumped right into 3d to create the entire movie?
Lightning McQueen makes up a tiny portion of that painting... animators need storyboards and hand-drawn images like this as style guides. Frankly, CGI 3D in general is not very conducive to the creative process--I can guarantee you that the concept and style work in every one of Pixar's films was done by hand.

That F1 car doesn't stand a chance against a thoroughbred NASCAR machine!

I really did love the Cars movie though. Even if the plot was kinda dull at times, it was fun to try to name all the cars and to see how close they nailed the driver stereotypes.

The wikipedia article says what's up:

        http://www.totalfilm.com/features/interview-john-lasseter/page:12

'Yeah, it’s different races in different countries. When I was travelling around the world doing interviews for Cars I just had the characters on the brain. I kept looking out thinking, ‘What would Mater do in this situation, you know?’

I could imagine him driving around on the wrong side of the road in the UK, going around in big, giant traveling circles in Paris, on the autobahn in Germany, dealing with the motor scooters in Italy, trying to figure out road signs in Japan...'

So it seems it wasn't because he wanted to show there were other kinds of racing, just that he wanted to put McQueen and Mater in situations that occur in other countries and they don't have NASCAR there.

Yeah, I really hope they don't make Lightning win a global race, because any F1 driver would murder anything in Nascar. Hell, even most Rally drivers would. If this is a movie about some ghey "nascar" winning the entire world, I'm going to be annoyed.

I can't wait for this movie! An open-wheel racer character, that'll be sweet!

      @Gruv

Are you meaning the F1 drivers would win in equal equipment? Sorry - but Juan Pablo & Scott Speed would prove otherwise. And if you want to include Other forms of open-wheel - Dario Franchitti, Jacques Villeneuve immediately come to mind as pretty respectable drivers that just didn't cut it in stock car racing. Sam Hornish isn't really setting the world on fire either - but at least he's still got a ride.

JPM's the only one that has wins, only on road courses, and somewhat controversial at that. He is, by far, the best performing F1/Indycar/CART transplant that the sport has seen,(except maybe Mario Andretti - but I would argue that there are generation gaps that make the 2 not apples-to-apples)and I expect him to continue improving - but people that simply say that a driver from "x" discipline of autosport would destroy the competiton in Stock-car racing - is simply ignorant of the statistics that prove otherwise.

Just a quiet vote to see an old #53 VW Beetle in this at some point.

I'm betting that the 'secret agent' that McQueen gets confused with is some kind of Aston Martin.

      Voiced by Sean Connery.

      Win.

Cars has already released short films on this. It's called Tokyo Mater. If the movie is anything like this short then it will be great!

        The Short Film was Epic!
        "....STOCK! *gasp!*" haha..
I hope the story is as funny as the other Mater shorts I've seen.

Haha yeah I enjoyed that short...

Yeah Gaga, I think it's supposed to be a Toyota Crown (i.e. the Crown Victoria of Japan), circa 1970-ish.

My 3-1/2 year old son loves Cars. He and I have watched it hundreds if times, including three times in one day. Even after almost 2 years of seeing it, I don't mind the story, and I am still catching subtle little things -the mountains as cadillac fenders or front grills is a good example... I hope Cars 2 is as good as the original, because I know I am going to be watching it over and over with my youngest who is only 5 months right now...
