When we look at Motor Trend magazine's golden calipers, we think of a prestigious trophy awarded each year to the publication's top car and truck of the year. Apparently, the Transportation Security Administration officials at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport see a weapon of mass destruction. Or something.
The proud engineers at Ford have been taking their well-deserved 2010 Ford Fusion Car of the Year award all over town, taking pictures and having a little fun, mimicking what athletes do when they win Lord Stanley's Cup in hockey or the Lombardi Trophy in football. Ford Research & Advanced Engineering employee Tony Phillips went as far as Disney World with the award, but apparently not before coming to the attention of the TSA at Detroit Metro airport. Phillips had rightly brought the sizable trophy onto the plane as a carry-on – after all, who would want to tell Allan Mulally that they lost the trophy at baggage claim?

MT's shiny hardware was eventually let on the plane after "some interesting discussion, and it made its way to Orlando to ride some rides and hang with Mickey. Surprisingly, the Orlando TSA agents were more familiar with Ford's award than were the security agents in the Motor City, and congratulations were given to them on the accomplishment. Just as an FYI for Ford, you can bring by your trophy to Autoblog headquarters any time you wish. We won't even frisk you at the door.

Its a car company ... for the life of me, why didn't they just drive down I-75 in one of their products. Screw the TSA and the airlines.

I feel bad for Mr. Phillips getting stopped by the TSA for something so lame. That's typical, though, of our government's airline "safety" policy. When I think of Motor Trend's golden calipers, I think of the most overrated award in the car writing business. Many of their choices over the years have turned out to be highly forgetable. The AMC Renault Alliance comes to mind. While it was a sales success, it is hardly regarded now as a good car, let alone significant. I think that Car & Driver's Ten Best (like C & D magazine itself) is far better. Rather than JUST focus on what is new or nearly-new THIS year, they consider what is a good vehicle. What are the standard bearers of a given class? The Fusion Hybrid, Accord, WRX, Civic, Cadillac CTS, and BMW 3 Series have all made the cut at times, some of them multiple times. It IS significant that the Fusion Hybrid has won BOTH awards this year, and THAT is to Ford's credit.

I could make a joke about the award being so rare in Detroit, that some person wouldn't recognize it, but that wouldn't be accurate. This is exactly what those crazies over there [as opposed to the crazies here] want. So much for all the ads that you can't get away from, where has this person been the last 30 years??? [the Vega won it back then, so age isn't a factor here. I can imagine the ad executives in a meeting with Ford after all those truck of the year awards LOL "What have we been paying you for all these years?"]

Maybe they should call Donald "YOUR FIRED!" Trump & "Maximum" Bob rather than regurgitated Bell "Operators" that act like Chaney?
