Your eyes do not deceive you – what you see above is four lanes of funny car action at the zMax Dragway in Charlotte, NC, built specifically for such shenanigans. That was just an exhibition run, but the National Hot Rod Association has announced that this year it will run 4-up racing in anger at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in two months.

The zMax venue is like two traditional drag racing setups put side-by-side and separated by a retaining wall. The track's chairman calls it "the Bellagio of drag strips," All four classes, Top Fuel dragsters, Funny Cars, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle will run in quadruples throughout the three days of competition, from qualifying to finals. The new method will shorten the final elimination round to about 3.5 hours, but should up the excitement scale to make up for it.

Top Fuel's 14-time champion John Force called the coming event "our version of March Madness." At 300 miles per hour. With lots and lots of smoke. Are we ready to think about christening 2010 The Year of Great Racing?

I want to see all 4 classes on the track at the same time in an exhibition run. The only problem will be who has the balls to take their bike out alongside a Pro-Stock. If something were to go wrong, well, bad stuff would occur.

lol, they got the idea from this family fun center by my house (see video)

hopefully never. c'mon bruton give us the best gimmick you got maybe a full mile drag strip with an exhibition race for a funny car vs the Bugatti veyron and a pro stock vs a ultimate earo tt (hey its a long shot(i mean who'd lend their car too such an event) but a boy can dream right!)

I guess this is one case where more is actually more! At least until there are so many tracks the audience has trouble seeing across all of them. It'll be like horse racing, except with cars.

I think this is a great idea and its fantastic to see its happening around the world!! This looks very similar to a concept track that has been proposed in Melbourne, Australia (check out: www.motorvatemelbourne.com ). Fingers crossed it gets the Governments tick of approval :)

They need to add 4 left hand turns too. Call it NASCAR N' Drag.

i havent watched this since they went to 1,000 feet its just the same its been a 1/4 mile since the beginning and thats the way it should be. all the records mean sh*t and will never be broken.

I agree. If you want to change the rules to slow them down, do that. Reduce the nitro % again, restrict the blowers, make them run some kind of restrictor plate. Personally I think they should make them run smaller tires and leave the engine rules alone. I've been around drag racing since 1983 and lately, seeing the 1000ft runs just isn't the same for some reason.

I may not be Bruton's biggest supporter, but he's dead-on with this one: THANKS, BRUTON!!!

who knows, maybe one day they'll introduce a turn?
      That would be just crazy

You should not hate on drag racing unless you have seen top-fuelers in person and did not like every molecule in your body shaking. It should be required for every petrol head to make a trip once to experience the feeling of the drag strip being bombed when they go by.

14,000 HP for 2 cars is awesome but I couldn't imagine what 28,000 HP feels like. 1000 ft does suck but I think the IHRA still runs the whole 1/4.

You can also make fun of the mullet wearing rednecks too!

      ....loud as hell.

I really wish Bruton would keep the gimmick for a match race or exhibition.

All this 4-lane stuff is nothing new, they were doing this in the 70's with sportsman cars. Dragway 42 in Ohio had it going on for their IHRA and AHRA races back then.

To those who haven't been to a drag race, it is a ton more enjoyable than what the TV coverage (which sucks) gives it to be.

Pretty sure that now-defunct Orange County Raceway in California used to run 'em 4-wide back in the day.........or maybe it was at the John Wayne Airport when they ran drags there.

        Good stuff!

if they really want to revolutionize drag racing they can add a curve
        • 4 Years Ago
yes, that was the premise of my statement.
That wouldn't revolutionize it, it'd defeat the purpose entirely.
