Th!nk City production in Finland – Click above for high-res image gallery

After all the announcements and retractions, hints and tax abatements, it's come to this: Think will make electric cars in Elkhart, Indiana.

Think has been talking about building and selling the highway-speed Think City electric vehicle to the U.S. for quite some time and two locations in Indiana – Elkhart and nearby Middlebury – were in the running the longest to get the manufacturing facility. When talks with the property owner in Middlebury broke down, Think decided on New Year's Eve to set up shop in Elkhart. Yesterday, the Elkhart City Council voted 8-0 to give Think a 10-year tax phase-in, a benefit worth almost $3 million. Late last year, Think re-started production in Finland, and a limited number of U.S. sales will start in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels and Think CEO Richard Canny will be giving a press conference in Elkhart this afternoon. We'll be speaking to Canny in a little while for more information. Thanks to David W. and Paul D. for the tips!

That's great news! I'm a long time resident of Elkhart and this news couldn't come at a better time.

What other cities were in the running?
Earlier, there were rumors that the plant might go to Michigan or Oregon.
That would have made me happier to have it go to Michigan but I'm glad another rust belt state got it.

This is great news! Of course, the first question I have is: *when* will these cars be sold here in the USA?

      Sincerely, Neil

The cars that will be built in Indiana? That's one thing we're going to ask, but it'll be a few years. Still, you should be able to buy an imported City in the U.S. later this year.

Well that didn't take long. They were realy shopping around for the best deal. They even considered Portland OR for a while.

Now like Tesla S model and Fiskers Nina, they must build the plant, equip it and begin producing cars. I will have to look at the specs on this car again. I think, no pun intended, Think will be producing approx. 95 mile range, hwy capable for $30,000.00?

GE, as an investor, needs to step up and make this happen. GE should be looking into LI battery mass production. They need to bring LI battery prices down to commodity pricing ASAP. They need to help with marketing. They need to make the quality excellent. This is a market war here, they need to act like they want to WIN it.

IF GE were in LI batteries, they could expand that throughout their product mix.
