MkI Volkswagen Polo by AME Racing – Click above to watch the video

Remember that drag racing, 700-horsepower Saab 99 with the Audi Quattro chassis swap? Well here's the MkI Volkswagen Polo version of that car, by AME Racing. The Wild Wild East German tuning house thoroughly reworked the motor, getting 1,032 horsepower and 701 pound-feet out of the 1.9-liter lump. Yes, a giant turbo is involved. Redline is a sky-high 9,500 rpm. Going from standstill to 60 miles per hour takes 2.3 seconds. That's less time than it took you to read that sentence.

We'll let the car do the rest of it's talking. Follow the jump to see the vid and watch a Polo do things that can only be described as "ridiculous."

Making a FWD car do that is amazing!
You know - FWD - front wheel drive. A very difficult layout to launch, due to the acceleration causing the weight shift towards the back and making the front end lose grip. This means you normally get wheel spin before forward motion causing the acceleration times to suffer as a result.

Of course, in engineering terms, it's not impossible to launch FWD cars cleanly, as these tuners have demonstrated.

        Excuse me?

Awesome, props to the people who made this.

traditional east german tuning: get much from less.

Ahh, the fun of VW tuning, insanity in a tiny car. Remember when they R32 first came and tuners had built 550 hp versions. To much fun.

one of the monster R32's you're remembering.

        pretty dope

I saw that before, just crazy how it launches like a rocket. I remember seeing a MK4 R32 thats was 550HP for about $75k, I think would be the perfect everyday super car. I just want the Kinetic Motorsport turbo kit for my VW, half that power, but still hours of fun.

What's even crazier is that the Polo uses a 1.9L inline-four, AME Racing claims, but as you can imagine, the mill is far from its stock counterpart: It features 13 injectors, a built bottom end, a reworked head, a massive Garrett GT40R turbocharger, and a custom water/air intercooler. AME Racing puts output at 1032-hp and 701 lb-ft of torque. Redline is 9400 rpm.

And the best part? That power goes through a six-speed manual that is connected to an Audi TT-sourced, all-wheel drive drivetrain. A run to 62 mph takes a claimed 2.3 sec, and AME Racing estimates the Polo is capable of over 185 mph.

      =-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I"m pumped to see them take that motor so far, I know of guys taking the 1.8T's to monster numbers but what surprises me here is that they used the TT's Haldex drivetrain..... I didn't think it could handle more than 500hp but look at that thing go!

      I'm very impressed

they've probably taken out haldex clutch and welded diffs. no need for such luxuries in dragster.

makes me wish there were more race tracks around the US

how traction works in that car is a mystery to me
