2011 Chevrolet Volt – click above for high-res image gallery

While the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is, without a doubt, one of the most anticipated cars in recent memory – green or otherwise – the car is a risky proposition. The car has new and unknown (to most) technology, a likely high price tag, and whatever associations people bring with them regarding General Motors' bailout. Wrap it all up, stick it in a blender to see what happens and Venture Beat is pretty sure the end result is a big, fat fail whale.

We agree with Venture Beat that the whole 230 miles per gallon thing is/was misleading, but we certainly scratch our heads when they report without comment that some people think the Volt's "lithium-ion battery technology will already be out of date by the time it launches." Really? The futuristic automotive technology that is available in like three production cars today will be out of date in 11 months? Whatever happens with the Volt, there's no way that li-ion packs go the way of the Betamax in 2010.
