2011 Ford Mustang GT – Click above for gallery of images

Thanks to some embargo breaking that's already occurred, we've known for a week that the 2011 Ford Mustang GT would pack a brand new 5.0-liter V8 producing 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. We thought those tidbits might hold over the internet 'till the official embargo date lifts early next week, but we were wrong and therefore are still awake at 1:30 AM on Christmas morning writing this post. Thanks to Jalopnik via MustangHeaven via BurlappCars, we have the first images of the 2011 Mustang GT and its new 5.0-liter V8.

You can read more about some of the engine's details that have already leaked here, but let's just take a look see at what we've got. Kudos to Ford for leaving the engine's tippy top unadorned and we also dig those 5.0 badges on the engine and fenders. Nostalgia FTW – OMG! An old fat guy with a sack of stuff just crawled out of my fire place! I think he's a burglar. Gotta go hide the silver, Merry Christmas!

THE 5.O IS BACK....there is a god. I owned an 89 mustang gt with the 5.0.......back then the 5.0's were bad ass (225hp/300lb ft torque). The 5.0 mustang LX "version" was lighter and a bit quicker than the gt though. Only the stock buick grand national could out drag a 5.0 mustang. THANK U FORD FOR BRINGING BACK THE 5.0... us OLD STANG BANGERS ARE REJOICING.....now, time to open a seperate savings acct. (FOOTNOTE...that 89, 5.0, 5 spd, white stang i bought new in 1989..cost $15,500 loaded with every option. Times have changed). Slapping a supercharger on this new 5.0 might get u close to 600hp at the flywheel...WOW. Shelby gt500 owners will not be happy.

Stang Banger me thinks you forget...I also bought a brand new 89 5.0 (LX though - loaded too - as much as loaded was back then) and it was rated at 225 hp, not 205. I think that happened a year or 3 later and it went down to 215 as I recall...but then that's 20 years ago and I don't feel like googling it. Too bad you lost to a GN...my wife (GF at the time) beat a couple of guys twice in a GN (on the street that is - I know, that's soooo wrong, and bad...must be why I married her) and I only ever lost to a hopped up cammed out 86 5.0 and a Vette. Never lost any other street race in it (I never did get to race an IROC though). I'd probably lose every one now though...age doesn't bring fast feet & knees. LOL

Ahhh...nostalgia. Wish I could go back...since I can't, I'd rather have a new 5.0...WAY better car without even ever having owned one (or likely that I ever will).

As much of a heritage the 5.0L has behind it, and I must admit, they are pretty indestructible engines... have you ever tried to find parts for an 83 5.0 HO? It's freakin impossible! I'm thinking one of these new 5.0's will end up in my car.

Camper..your right...i forgot about the iroc-z and the vette. I just remember getting my butt whipped by a grand national back then. The 87-88 1/2 mustang gt's had 225 hp..in 89 they changed over to the mass air and power decreased to 205.
Like u said though...amazing at 5.7L and it only put out 230hp. But back in those days..mustangs, camaros, vettes, grand nationals with 200 plus hp were the bad assess of the day. Toyota camrys put out more than that today. lol MERRY XMAS TO EVERYONE

One more thing, I heard they could be offering both the 4.6 and the 5.0 for people who want more power? Does anyone know for sure if it is just the 5.0 or the 4.6 and the 5.0?
I heard they could keep them both so they would have a low cost GT and a higher end GT? I would love to hear more from Ford about this... I spent $35k for my 2010 4.6L and I heard the 5.0 could come in at around $40k if they were to offer both engines. The Ford guys at the LA show were very vague but said it was an option and smiled.

Silly: Even though the HP is close the V6 is a 5.9 0-60 car and the 4.6 is a 4.9-5.0 0-60 car. If I had to guess the 400 HP GT will come in around 4.6-4.7?

The ole mod motors (4.6, 5.4) are on short-term until the panther platform dies...

As far as this 5.0 V8, notice all the room in the engine bay around the motor, nice n compact "small block" and its based off the ole 351 Cleveland race engines - big bore, short stroke for quick high rpm (6500-7000 redline) and it gets up the torque curve real quick too... This engine is going to be a hoooooot to drive and it will beat the SS Camaro, no problem! Ford tested this mustang against a 450+HP BMW M3 and they stayed neck n neck...not bad for Detroit iron is it!

What would be the point with the V-6 having nearly as much power than the 4.6?
Pretty sure that they will kill the old 4.6 off... I don't see a lot of costumers for it, and keeping it for nostalgia sake is kinda expensive.

Merry Christmas guys and thanks for writting this at 1:30am on Christmas morning! This is the long awaited 5.0! I bought the 2010 Mustang GT and though it would be nice to have the 5.0 I am very happy with our purchase. This car rocks!!

Wow, that was a sobering look at what could come to the states at some point. Not sure how I feel but your right things are likely going in that direction at some point.
        be careful with your purchase.
such cars can become unsellable if fuel price rises.

the price of the fuel is artificially down, because it's subsidized.
Europe and the United States have recently discussed this issue and made an agreement about this.
it's just a matter of time.

it's most likely the united states will introduce similar rules like here in Europe, where purchase tax is based on CO2 per km.

in 2011 in the Netherlands they launch a satellite based system where you pay for each km you drive + co2 + rush hour tarifs, vehicle purchase tax will be waved.
from what i have read, the base price is 3.x cent per km + co2 rating of your car + rush hour.

        be prepared.

Oil is both heavily taxed and subsidized. $72B in subsidies over 7 years.

THAT IS AWESOME! The 5.0L engine looks great!
Engine looks good. Love the 5.0 badges on the fenders... although my 89 had it's 5.0 badges removed ;)

We've already seen engine 'spy' shots months ago and I'm pretty sure that black piece is fake and unnecessary. I guess the black plastic matches the exterior... still don't know why they had to add all that black plastic with the 2010 redesign.
