Though the Honda Insight is handily outpacing sales projections in its home market of Japan, sales in the rest of the world are falling well short of expectations. Of the 200,000 Insights Honda had hoped to sell annually, 100,000 of those were supposed to come from the American market, 60,000 from Japan and the final 40,000 from Europe.

In reality, Honda has sold roughly 80,000 Insights in Japan but only 20,000 so far in the U.S. and another 15,000 in Europe. By way of contrast, Toyota is continuing its strong sales showing with the 2010 Prius. For the month of November, Honda sold 1,403 Insights while Toyota sold 9,617 Prius hybrids.

For what it's worth, roughly 10 percent of all cars sold in Japan are hybrids while U.S. hybrid sales, though up from previous years, struggle to crack the 3 percent barrier.

      I myself have been really hit by this recession so I am surprised if anyone (apart from Citi group executives) are buying cars at the minute ;)

      If Honda would have offered a manual transmission for the Insight II I would have bought one. The CRZ only has 2 seats so that is a deal breaker for me. Maybe I'll have to look at the Fit again.

      I was just in the market for a new car, and the Insight was my first choice. Until I realized that I had to buy a $1500 option package full of options I had no interest in just to get cruise control. Cruise control is essential for hybrid drivers, so this really felt like a ball bust. It annoyed me to the point that I didn't even consider the car, bought a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI instead. So far I'm averaging just over 40mpg, and I've managed to pack of ton of stuff in there on few road trips. I spent about $6k more, but that includes a SICK after-market Kenwood in-dash Navi unit that wouldn't have fit in the Honda, and the Jetta is a much nicer car. I'm loving the diesel, maybe once it's paid off I'll have the balls to throw bio in there.

      I was in the market for a car, right in this price range. I was sure the Insight was going to be for me, until I drove it.

      I loved the dash with the color change fuel economy feedback. I imagine it'll make it's way to the CRZ and next civic hybrid. I really think they should put it on all cars to make people more conscious of how they're driving, or give them an option to turn it on.

      I'm 5'4", not a very tall person, and when I sat in the middle of the back seat, my head hit the ceiling. The slope of roof starts too early, makes the car feel quite small. The blind spots were problematic, I didn't like the split in the rear hatch which was distracting when I looked in my rear view. Overall feel in the car was not up to my standard for Honda. It felt frankensteined together, and not well thought out.

      I thought the shift paddles on the EX were a marketing add on to make the car "sporty". My 2008 civic drives sportier than the insight did.

      I bought a lightly used 2008 civic hybrid, and I love it. Got 45.2 mpg on my first tank, which isn't hypermiler status, but still good for the reformed leadfoot in me.

      The 2009 civic I drove was just a better car all around compared to the Insight. Yes it's more expensive at 25/26k w/Nav to 22k w/Nav for the Insight, but you get quite a bit for that extra money.

      The cabin seems to be cost reduced and feels cheap. My feeling is that Honda Civic Hybrid is the real competitor to the Toyota Prius, and it's not surprising that people don't want this new Insight.

      For the US market, people who buy hybrids want "nice" cars, and usually pick navigation systems and upgraded interiors as options. The Insight can't stack up to a loaded Prius with leather interior and all the bells and whistles.

      I think Honda missed the mark. People don't want a car cheaper than the Civic, for the ones that the Civic doesn't satisfy, they should have stuck to the original Insight's design and made an iconic super efficient car that could give a driver bragging rights for having better fuel economy than his Prius owing buddies.
