2010 Volvo XC60 - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's the holiday season and that means shopping and deal-finding is at a premium. A trip to warehouse stores Costco or Sam's Club will likely net you some tidy deals on anything from eggs and Hot Pockets to a Jacuzzi or even a casket. Even carmakers are getting in on the dealmaking, as a recent promotion with Mitsubishi and Sam's can attest. Not to be outdone, Costco is also getting in on the act.

The warehouse store and Sweden's Volvo are collaborating on a promotion for the XC60, XC70 and XC90 that includes discounts and a $500 Costco card which comes six-to-eight weeks after purchase. Customers who purchase an XC60 from Costco also get Volvo employee pricing. Buyers of the XC70 and XC90 will receive an additional $500 off. The deals being offered through Costco are in addition to any dealer incentive programs that are currently available.

We find it rather amusing that the promotion is only for Volvo crossovers – and yet it makes complete sense at the same time. Shopping at Costco practically necessitates driving a large vehicle while a quick glance at any warehouse store parking lot reveals a sea of trucks, SUVs and minivans. At least Volvo appears to be properly targeting Costco's customer base.

And that'll be the signal to all good people to abandon the sinking ship that the USA has become.

If you need to resort to selling cars at Costco, maybe it's time to put those models out to pasture, refocus some energy on products with potential.

Makes sense, Costco sells big boxes of everything else.

Go in for a 10lbs bag of peanuts, come out with a XC60, 50lbs of meat, 5 60" LCD TV, and a full stomach from those samples.

"Free Samples." I thought that was lunch.

Sounds about right for a regular Costco trip...

I'm always baffled at how I can pick up just a few items and have the total ring up to well over $100.

What I find funny is the way I come out with a cartload of stuff, and get it all in the back of my wife's Prizm (which already has a stroller and a bunch of other toddler-related stuff).

And the guy next to me is scratching his head wondering how on earth he's going to get his far smaller load onto the back of his F150.

      1. I know how to pack stuff in
      2. I don't have to lift my crap to shoulder height

A partnership with Ikea would have been more fitting...
I thought that too, for a second, until I remember that we don't have an Ikea in Indianapolis. Apparently they think the new one in Cincinnati is close enough and don't want to saturate the midwest market? The drive to Cinci is nice, but it's a shorter trip to the 2 area Costcos.

Costco Canada has a $1000 promotion with Ford since around August.

I love my Volvo Cross Country (XC70) and have had it for 10 1/2 years now, 165,000 miles. And I still get 23mpg. I plan to drive it till its last gasping breath, but when I do need another one it is good to know I can go to Costco for it. This is the best car on the road and isn't a big SUV. Very safe, and I don't hve to put snow chains on it when I go to the mountains (which is a lot).

Costco is doing that now for the third year. Guess you're a little late on this news.
The question is will Costco stay open late enough for vampires to shop. I mean these are things they have to consider when pushing Volvo vehicles, even if it is just the X-series.
