2012 Mercedes ML spy shots -- Click above for high-res image gallery

The next iteration of the Mercedes ML-class has been caught braving the European cold and snow for some testing as it gets ready for its debut.

There will probably be plenty of subtle stylistic changes to distinguish it from the current model, but the biggest news about the coming SUV is that it will be smaller. Of course, it's hard to tell from the cloak of darkness camouflage on the prototype pictured, but it does look slightly less imposing than the current hauler. Early indications are that the various engine offerings in the next ML will focus on efficiency over performance, but we suspect it won't be a slouch dynamically.

We can expect it to appear in the middle of 2011 as a 2012 model.

Wow, that does not look good. I know, that is some serious camo, but the overall shape is not flattering, reminds of the previous gen Equinox, or any random cheap midsize suv.

Well, considering that the next Grand Cherokee was made from the same platform, the next-gen ML may look a lot more mature. It will be interesting to see how it finally comes out and how M-B markets their new mid-sizer.

Looks like a puffed-up first-generation Saturn Vue. Not a horrible look, but not distinctive at all.

I've been seriously thinking about buying a late '90s SL or CL. Benzes from back then had a real old-school German character which is missing from their current products, even products as great as the CL63 and E63.

Hahahaha, From the old chrystler days they decided to use the hood off of the sebring.

      Hopefully that is just camo.

I've never been a big fan of the M class... or any MB SUV for that matter... oh except for the G-cabrio. Based on appearances alone, the only one I've ever given a second glance was the post-facelift first generation (02-05) but of course the old school MB quality was completely absent from this model. I'm hoping this new M isn't as awkward looking as the GLK but yeah, it's hard to tell with all the camo.

Dr. Z says the hood is ribbed "for her pleasure."

It doesn't look all that different from the current one, except that the greenhouse looks taller.

Looks like a Dodge Caliber with a Sebring Hood. Looks like the stylist is working at MB now.

Well he looks like he is well on his way to doing the same thing with MB. I hate what they have done lately.

Maybe the stylist never left Mercedes to begin with. Maybe he was just lent to Chrysler (to completly FUBAR their design).

Look like it is doing a good job continuing the ML's tradition of ugliness.
