Mazdaspeed2 Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

As cool as some of those custom Ford Fiestas are at the LA Auto Show, these even tidier Mazda2 customs really jumped out at us. Okay, maybe not all of the concepts so much as the "Mazdaspeed2" you see above. The Active2 Surf and Active2 Snow barely registered when we saw this green and grey fun machine. Dubbed the 2Evil Special and not really an official Mazdaspeed2 at all, this concept blends weekend track car with urban commuter in just the right proportions.
The other two concepts aren't quite as eye-catching as the 2Evil, but are fun nonetheless. The Active2 Surf has a slightly restyled exterior, 17-inch wheels, an H&R coil over suspension and was painted a bright green with MINI-like white wheels and mirror caps. We really dug the carbon fiber surfboard in the Thule roof rack, too. The Active2 Snow gets similar bodywork tweaks, along with the 17-inch wheels and the H&R setup with another Thule roof rack sporting matching snowboards.. Both cars also wear Active2 graphics. These two cars look like they are going to be easily duplicated by accessing the Mazda Accessories catalog.

Meanwhile, the 2Evil sits even lower thanks to its H&R coil-over setup, and is visually lowered even more courtesy of the aggressive body kit with its curb-scraping front lip and deep side skirts. The 2Evil also includes a new diffuser and spoiler in the back, limo-black windows, Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B tribute graphics, 17-inch wheels wrapped in Yokahama Advan tires, and a Magna performance exhaust system. The green highlights really bring the whole thing together to make it look like a spec series racer. Now if Mazda could just shoehorn in the Mazdaspeed3 turbo mill, they'd really be onto something. We can just imagine Grand-Am adding a CC (commuter car) class for fun little runabouts like this Mazda2, the MINI Cooper, Fiesta, Fiat 500, Honda Fit and the like.

PRESS RELEASE

Mazda 2Evil Special Concept

This concept is inspired by the weekend track car but one that can function equally well as an urban commuter. The body has been modified to show a more aggressive front spoiler and a deeper side rocker for improved aerodynamics and lower overall stance. A strong lower diffuser is added to enhance the rear proportion and more emphasis is placed on the exhaust tip. The rear upper spoiler was redesigned for both additional downforce and a race appearance. The dynamic MAZDA2 body is finished in Ceramic Grey metallic with subtle motorsports inspired graphics. The graphics are finished off with the historic number 55, a tribute to the 1991 Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B race car. Wheels, mirrors and other details are accented in Spirited Green. To top it off, the performance and stance are enhanced with 17" wheels, 215/45/17 Yokahama Advan tires, lowered coil-over suspension provided by H&R and Magna performance exhaust.

The Mazda Active2 Surf & Snow Special Concepts

The Active2 Surf exterior showcases a more aggressive front bumper and rocker. Adding to the sport theme, 17" wheels with 215/45/17 Yokahama Tires and H&R coil over suspension were applied. The sheet metal is finished in Spirited Green and detailed with Active2 graphics. These subtle effects are displayed on the hood and driver-side fender. The graphics are finished in graphite and white, with matching wheels and mirrors. To support the overall concept, the Active2 Surf has been set up with a Thule roof rack system and a matching carbon fiber surfboard.

The Active2 Snow exterior showcases a more aggressive front bumper and rocker. Adding to the sport theme, 17" wheels with 215/45/17 Yokahama Tires and H&R coil over suspension were applied. The sheet metal is finished in Frozen White and detailed with Active2 graphics. These subtle effects are displayed on the hood and driver-side fender. The graphics are finished in graphite and Spirited Green, with matching wheels and mirrors. To support the overall concept, the Active2 Snow has been set up with a Thule roof rack system and matching snowboards.

I would be very interested in knowing if Mazda has any plans at all for a Mazdaspeed variant of this little gem. I could see this new B market segment being the new civics, wrxs and Evolutions of the next generation.

If a Mazdaspeed version of this car came to be true, I would buy one tomorrow!

Dear God that is incredible looking. That blows even my MazdaSpeed3 away!!! I love what they did to that car. It looks like it could be the fun car of the segment.

Wow, just wow...I'm really enjoying this sudden influx of subcompacts. I've never really been interested in these small econo-boxes, but this along with the Fiesta marks what I hope to be a wonderful new focus on small, efficient, fun, and most importantly affordable vehicles that don't require vast changes to our current transportation and energy infrastructure. Perhaps with enough public interest, Americans will soon break free of their obsession with large, inefficient SUV's and pick-ups. I know, I know...it will probably be hard to break such an ingrained preference for those people who already drive them as their personal vehicles, but perhaps the trend will eventually wind down, and the streets won't be cluttered with these behemoths.

I'm normally not a fan of white cars, but that white Mazda2 looks incredible. I'd probably opted out of the decals, but I'm definitely for them as an option. If HP can customize the appearance of your laptop, why not car manufacturers offer their customers some personalization?

I'd trade my M3 if that came tomorrow. Hello cheap, fun daily driver!

I wouldent say "too extreme" I would call it unique (and badass)
Good points lol I've been lucky enough to get hand-me-down cars so I don't know about these things you call "payments"
It was fun being a BMW driver while it lasted though right? Stop giving me more reasons to get rid of mine!!

Also I would get rid of my current M3 for a brand new sports car under warranty too.

lol, no car payment, under warranty (M3 isnt anymore) cheap to fix, great on gas. The economy sucks. You dont need a fast car to have a fun drive. Like I said - if it comes out tomorrow id get one (as shown).

I like it too but that seems a little extreme

Not a big fan of the smiling grille either. I'd love to get a new 3 but that grille just kills me. At least on this car it almost looks good.
What's with Mazda's "smiley face" front end design(s)? It looks horrid on every car they've applied it to(!)
We're lauding a body kit and exhaust? This tops the show? I'll have to tell the local Hot Import Nights ricers, they could be the top item at a major auto show too.
It's not really the body kit and exhaust that they are going crazy over. I mean, they really like how it looks (me included), but just the general idea of a Mazdaspeed2 is exciting all on its own. Something that would look like one of these, but have, say, a 200 hp engine.

I know it's just a body kit and exhaust, but just thinking about a bad@ss Miniature Mazdaspeed is mouthwatering.

It seems like buying a B segment car would no longer be a bad idea with this and the fiesta in the mix. I think its nice to see this two cars get their share and possibly expand the small car segment. I love this car in this color just as much as I like the idea of getting a Fiesta with an Rs Package.

      Mazda2 VS. Fiesta?
