VIDEO: Yes, the 2010 Audi S4 can drift
Click above to view the video after the jump
When we drove the 2010 Audi S4, we praised the sedan's trick electronic rear differential for its ability to shuffle torque between the rear wheels to give the sensation, if not the exact effect, of oversteer. Unfortunately, our track time was spent in an e-diffless model, so we didn't get to fully exploit its potential around Infineon. However, hot-shoe Ignacio Perez did just that at Spain's Jarama circuit.
After the jump you can watch Perez putting the new S4 into full-on drifts around the track with one nervous front seat passenger and his camera-wielding companion in tow. Although getting the S4 sideways isn't too difficult (we did it a few times in the standard model), you can see in the video that speed drops off precipitously at corner the exit. Regardless, modern-day Audis are no longer relentlessly pushing, nose-heavy beasts and, what's more, Perez was wagging his tail in an S4 Avant, the five-door version we can't get in the States... dammit.

Audi really has come a long way. Try that in a bone stock B5 or B6 and understeer would plow you right off the track.

Best news I've heard all day

It still does not drift properly because of understeer.
Watch it closely and see how the driver flicks the wheel before each corner to make the car drift. You can drift a Golf with that move, it's pointless. Wheel flicks and left foot braking are not proper drifting :P

also notice how slow he's going after each drift, if the 2010 S4 could really drift he'd be going much faster at the exits.

I did that once i my Z. The cops didn't think it was too funny.

Actually, it kind of sounds like my car when I take a corner badly in Gran Turismo.

I don't know how to drift intentionally, nor have I really watched any professional drifting, but that doesn't seem right...
I thought the purpose of a drift was to maintain a fairly constant speed throughout a corner, or at least minimize speed loss by avoiding braking. Except this video is totally the opposite; his RPMs drop way low and he slows down a lot. Maybe he's not shifting correctly? I don't know, can someone elaborate?

exactly my point ...he just slid through the corner till he came to an almost stop ....maybe if he had downshifted and powered throughout the whole turn ...maybe then it would be drifting ....but i know its harder in AWD ...so to me this just looks like some powersliding through a turn ...still looks really fun

The purpose of drifting is to quickly burn through a set of $500 tires so you can go buy another set. It has nothing to do with getting quickly around a track unless the track is inside a parking garage (ala tokyo drift).
paul34 4:26PM (11/19/2009)
Drifting is not the most efficient way to get through a corner whatsoever. Drifiting is its own sport.
Unless of course you're living in Tokyo Drift.

If drifting (on pavement) was fast, F1 racers would do it, but they don't.
thipps 3:17PM (11/19/2009)
hahahah you call that a drift , skine is right this is a powerslide,
it practically falls on its face, no balls
