Final Buell motorcycle assembled in Wisconsin

As far as motorcycle manufacturers go, Buell lived a relatively short life. Founded by a former Harley-Davidson engineer in 1993, the sportbike company was acquired by HDMC in 2003. But hard times falling on businesses large and small forced Harley to announce Buell's closure. And now the last Buell has been pushed off the assembly line and into the great wild yonder.
After 136,923 motorcycles built over the course of 26 years of production, the final model produced was the black Lightning XB12Scg pictured above. On December 18, the plant in Troy, Wisconsin, will officially close down, while the existing network of dealers continue to sell off the remaining stock.
Farewell, Buell. We hardly knew ye.

Okay, I am confused. "founded in 1993" but "26 years of production"? Did they mean found in '83?

Autoblog, you and your typos are really starting to piss me off. You guys are paid to blog. The least you can do is spell check and check your information.

*Conan Obrien voice* In the year two thousand........and nineteen..........
Rob 4:45PM (11/18/2009)
Probably meant to be 1983.
Chris O 5:15PM (11/18/2009)
Yep, they meant 1983. The linked article mentioned the 26 years... I guess it was just an AB math fail.

it is truly a sad day for American motorcycles. We can only hope that some of the engineering that was put into these machines finds their way into the HD stream of vehicles (like some already has in the XR1200 engine).

It is a sad day for Buel and American motorcycles. I just hope any of the technology they bring over to Harley Davidson is a way to stop motors from leaking oil. Many of my friends own both Buells and Harleys and they all leak oil. How can you make a bike these days that leaks oil? Oh and I own an Italian bike and no it doesn't have any leaks.
montoym 4:58PM (11/18/2009)
It's sort of like owning an old air-cooled VW as well I guess. They always say, "if it's not leaking oil, you'd better go loosen a bolt because somethings's wrong".
Redline 5:08PM (11/18/2009)
@ DTown: That's because the motors are crap. I'm sure the 1125 with the Rotax engine doesn't leak any oil. Did a motorcycle course on Buells, about 80% of them were all "marking their territory".

They must not be doing proper maintenance. I have owned both Sportsters and Buells for over 15 years and none of them have leaked. It sounds to me like the stealership not doing their job. But then again that is why I do all my own work...

buddy of mine scored a new 1125CR for $5600 out the door. ridiculous! Now the dealers are tryin' to get $7k for 'em. Good luck.

I would love to be able to justify picking one of these up but not much of a rider and just got a project car. great deals on great bikes.

The last one has rolled off the line, so why is the plant reamining open for another month?

As a motorcycle rider for the last 20 years, Buells are the most boring, quiet, unexciting and uncomfortable motorcycles I've ridden to date. Can't say I'm going to miss them very much, if at all.
