Being the type of people who obsessively cover the auto industry, we generally prefer four-wheeled travel to pedal-for-yourself bicycling. Not that riding a bike is a bad thing... quite the opposite, actually. Getting out, seeing the sights and smelling the fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of the city is a great way to spend some free time and maybe put a dent in the ol' blogger spare tire.
That said, if we've got somewhere to be, like, say, meeting up with some old Italian friends at the local wine bar, we'd certainly opt for the car. After watching the video after the break, though, we wonder if it would be a safer bet to just hop on the bus. Guess it depends on your chosen occupation, eh? Sure, bicyclists live longer...those bicycle airbags, crumple zones and seat belts have prevented thousands of bicyclists from dying in an accident.

@Malaycobra, "bicicletta" is italian, the french generally use the word "vélo" when spoken and the word "bicyclette" when written.

Considering the attention span of the typical cyclist is no better than the attention span of the typical car driver, I don't think cyclists live any longer than drivers. Especially round these parts.

Speaking as an "Amurrrican" [is that a sic or a slur?] and an avid bicyclist who lives in the state of Florida, the weather here makes it impractical to use bicycles as transportation for anything other than recreation for 9-10 months out of the year. Our high temperatures and high humidity make scurrying from air-conditioned building-to-vehicle-to-building the norm. Even walking a block most of the time in business clothes would result in a sweaty mess.
Granted, I (unfortunately) perspire more than the average person, and there are some on the other side of the spectrum (lucky sobs!) who don't at all, but I'm representative of the vast majority.
For those of you outside the US, most of our South is in a similar situation. I'd also seat-of-the-pants-guess that, generally speaking, about 25-40% of the country is in a similar situation 60-80% of the year.
Now if you're complaining about those who don't bicycle in more temperate areas, I see your point - but that's not the whole country.

notYou, I have the same (high perspiration) problem... and I live in Florida, as well.
My mom manages to ride her bike more than she drives her car, to the point of telling me that it's faster to get around on her bike than in her car. I'm not so sure about that, but whatever floats her boat... Every time I see her and she tells me about some close call that she had, I feel better and better about never riding my bike.

In the Netherlands people often use their cars for short trips through town. I guess the infomercial is trying to convince them to use a bike, because it is just as fast in town and the exercise is good for them.
