VIDEO: Heffner Performance teases Twin Turbo Audi R8
Heffner Performance Twin Turbo Audi R8 - click above to watch the video
We're starting to see this type of thing more and more. And by "type of thing" we mean dyno teasers, not twin-turbo Audis. Nonetheless, you are staring at the unclothed rump of an Audi R8 with two massive turbochargers sitting on a four-wheel dynometer. And the results are, well, calling them boring to watch would be a polite understatement. However...
The car is by Heffner, and while we find the video a little lacking (you'll see), we must give it up for the soundtrack. Audibly, this is about as good as things get. And what do you get if you let Heffner replumb your R8's engine? How does 536 wheel horsepower on 93 octane sound? Sound like about 640 crank horsepower to us. Watch (or rather, listen to) the video, after the jump. Hat tip to Tony M!

Sounds freakin' awesome, but not as good as their TT Ford GT. Excuse me while I go get the tissues...

Is that 6psi = 536 awhp,,,,,,from the 4.2 V8 or from the V10 ??????

That was a VOcho and I'd assume that it is awhp being it was on a 4wd dyno. But you know what happens when you assume!
Franz 5:23PM (11/13/2009)
I'm thinking it's the V8. The literature on their website states that the 536rwhp figure equals a 183rwhp gain. That would put the original at-the-wheels figure at 353... right in the ballpark for V8 whp figures. They're working on kits for both the V8 & V10 though.

too bad the cooling issues prevent putting turbos on the V10.

Spark-
You better follow up a statement like that with some credible data based on 1st hand knowledge.
Forced induction is nothing new. The same techniques work with all cars.
Additional cooling is always available, if even by meth only.
Waiting for your response.

I was thinking the whole time "PUT THE PEDAL TO THE METAL DAMNIT!"

well, I cannot wait til I get home and can listen to the sounds this thing makes. It looks incredible. On the other hand, the lambo's NA v12 makes 640hp. Minus two cylinders, plus two HUGE turbos, I'd like to see a little bit more power.

Displacement is a lot more important than the number of cylinders for performance. It actually has 4 less cylinders and 2.3l less displacement, and those are not huge turbos. The output is quite good considering it's only a 4.2 l V8. Yes they could get a ton more out but then ur bumping up the cost and significantly decreasing reliability. I think this is a pretty good avg between performance and reliability. I'd say it's an an avg turbo tune and in the future you'll see more aggressive tunes.
neoscape 6:24PM (11/13/2009)
Well, if we are assuming that it is the V8 it is more impressive... granted it would still be down on displacement from the bull's v12, I would still be disappointed if the power numbers were from the v10. Anyway, now that I HAVE listened to it, I would be scared the blow-offs would knock some body panels loose or something, it sounds vicious.

Seems like they could get a hell of a lot more horsepower out of that thing than that.

maybe... but they are turbocharing a high compression motor. If they swapped our the internals, lowered the compression, (not sure what they are doing for an intercooler), and did extensive fuel system mods,, then sure... this could be a 1000hp car.

Gumpert has a 800HP version of the Apollo using the Audi 4.2l V8 and more is possible.
MK 5:24PM (11/13/2009)
Yes. I'll take two please. One in my R8 & one in the A8.
Right after I win Lotto.

I take issue with this statement: "two massive turbochargers" no -- they are not massive.. small to moderate at best. The fab work though, looks TOP notch!

I don't care what the dyno numbers are.
IMO, all that's important is the performance.
Can the car hold it's own against the zr1 or even the nissan gtr?
If not, it's the second time they wasted money, first on the purchase of the car, second on the turbo setup.

I would actually argue that the cars you mention are more of "a waste of money" as there is no place you're really going to be pushing these cars (except on the track) where you'll be able to discern the difference and the R8 is WAY better looking with a better interior then both the other cars you mentioned... Add a sick TT setup and now it's fast AND Sounds awesome.

Completely agreed with MikeofLA.
Plus the fact that it is BOTH mid-engined and AWD with that kind of power, those looks, and that interior.
That thing looks fantastic, even without the body panels re-installed.
A turbo or super-charged V8 R8 with V10 body upgrades (I like the wider slats, scoops, and oval exhaust tips...) would be utterly fantastic.
Second only to a McLaren MC4-12C, which will probably be lighter all around, and the engine is built for turbocharging, and probably a featherweight little screamer. I'd give up the AWD for that.
Corvette and GT-R, just by brute force, don't motivate me nearly as much as a fantastic mid-engined car.
