Presidential Limousine - Click above for a high-res image gallery

Tragedy struck the streets of Maryland Wednesday when a pair of heavily armored Secret Service vehicles designed to escort the Vice President struck and killed a pedestrian at an intersection. Inside Line reports that the unfortunate accident occurred at 2:27 am Wednesday morning in rainy conditions as the armored Cadillac limo and Chevrolet Suburban were en-route from Andrews Air Force base to a secure storage location. Vice President Joe Biden was not on board when the incident took place.

The armored vehicles, which weigh over 13,000 pounds, are driven by employees who have taken a special protective operator's driving course. The Washington Post has quoted a Secret Service official as saying the vehicles' added heft makes the vehicles "trickier to handle than ordinary vehicles." The incident is currently under investigation by the U.S. Park Police.

Personally I believe that it was the operators of the vehicles that killed the pedestrian. The vehicles didn't do it all by themselves.

Knowing the area where the pedestrian was reportedly struck, I'd wager to say that the drivers were moving, uhm, quickly. That stretch of road is a really fun drive without traffic.

Having also walked there late at night, middle of that road is probably not the safest place to be, rain or not.

Too bad it was not Cheney's motorcade. Every lefty's head would have exploded.

those cars s*ck, it doesn't offer the slightest protection.

a simple armoured audi A8, bwm 7 or s class(the best armoured vihicles in the world, especialy the A8, build like that, not a ready product and later transformed in a hotrod) is enough.
probaly 90% if not more of the worlds leaders use these.

if someone wants to get you, he wil get you, no mather what.
      10cm thick plating or not.

the presidiential helicopter hardly offers any protection if not any, both travel hapely with it.
      fishy, stuff.

typical american, seeing ghost where there aren't any.

Cheney shot a guy in the face with a shotgun.
The Vice President of the United States of America SHOT SOMEONE IN THE FACE WITH A SHOTGUN.

This incident was a secret service agent (read: not elected) killing a pedestrian in the street in a car accident.

      ...can you see the difference?

Can anyone spell A C C I D E N T??? At two am or two pm, pedestrians and cars are on the streets in D.C. I'm sure the pedestrian didn't set out to get killed and I'm equally sure the driver of the limo didn't set out to kill this pedestrian. Unless you are suggesting that there was a conspiracy to kill this particular pedestrian with this particular government limo, it was an ACCIDENT, not planned, spontaneous eruption of supremely bad luck...

@AZZO45b: "No its your ill rational HATE of anything Obama."

Hmmm, my point was intended to reflect the slant of the _press_, and didn't have anything to do with Obama.

I suspect your explosive reaction incorporates far more "HATE" than my original point. Please re-read and then check your temperature again.

Unbelievable. I knew I hated that limo for a reason. Yeah sure, it is cool because it is built on a truck frame, but I am SURE that the money used to build that thing would have been better off if allocated elsewhere.
I am pretty sure the limo is equipped with an automatic grandma life support plug puller.
        Like where?
The purpose of that vehicle is to protect the President and the Vice President from people that are trying to kill them.
We have only had a few presidents killed in the history of this country.
Even the Pope was almost assassinated.
That is just an ignorant statement to make.

If you think the motorcade is too expensive, you shouldn't even look at Air Force One. The money spent on that program is absolutely astronomical and dwarfs this by orders of magnitude.

I think it is worth it, they have a hell of a job to do. Keeping our president safe (whether you like him or not) is paramount to a stable society.
Jake, you're an idiot. Nobody is killing grandma. Please learn to read. More importantly, lean to stay on topic.
About half of the presidents in U.S. history have suffered at least one assassination attempt.

How would you suggest we protect them for cheaper?

One wonders what a pedestrian was doing in an intersection in the rain, at half-past 2am...

But one also wonders if the drivers were driving those insanely heavy vehicles more carelessly than normal due to the late hour, in the rain, and not thinking any pedestrians would be around.

Sounds like a bad deal, and an unfortunate loss of life.

Gee, I dont wonder. Coming home from a date, homeless, coming home from work, going to a second job, ... many reasons.
we dont know if the guy was crossing against the light or if the driver was.

I guess the interesting part is that all articles say both cars hit the pedestrian. pedestrian's name was not released. Anybody know if a Fox Opinion writer is missing?

I agree with you, however, it has been a miserable couple of days around here with the rain, can't see anything, especially at night. It's still too bad about the death though.
OOOO boy, i am going to love to see how this turns out. If its like the case im involved in the drivers of every gov vehicle will be sued wether they were at the scene or not. the makers of the car, heck even people who saw what happened will get sued.

guess we will have to see.

The question is what the hell was the predestrian walking about in DC at 2:27 AM in the rain?
People have night jobs, I managed a warehouse a few years ago that sold to supermarkets. I finshed up about 2 every night. Even if the person went out to a club or bar , it does not give the cars the right to run them over. what was the limo doing out that late.
drunk? that's the only reason i've ever been out in dc after 2am. common sense typically prevents most people from wondering about dc that late.
Thank you Mike and Randy for being the voice of reason. I work the late (morning) shift sometimes too.

Since when can an American citizen NOT be out on a city street any time of day or night. Rain. shine. snow or black ice? Why does Obama need a armored tank on wheels to toot him and Biden around. Is it a damn shame our president has to fear someone will shoot him if he appears in public. What in the world is America becoming?? TAX PAYERS MONEY AT WORK?/ and one dead American Pedestrian?
