Lutz: High-performance Chevy Volt SS a "possibility"

Electric cars are for those who would rather drive slow, boring commuters that don't consume fossil fuels and therefore don't spew pollutants from their tailpipes. Gas-powered cars – and especially those wearing time-honored badges like SS, R/T or GT – are for those who prefer fire-breathing, tire-screeching performance and care much more about nitrous oxide than nitrogen oxide. Right? Not so fast, says Bob Lutz.
When asked whether or not Chevy could shock the performance crowd with an SS version of the upcoming Volt, Lutz said, "I would not discount that possibility." That's as close as you're going to get to an admission of intent this early in the game. Lutz goes on to suggest that the Voltec powertrain will allow for plenty of on-demand power. "[I]f we want to sacrifice a little bit of fuel efficiency in the interest of performance and still get over 200 miles per gallon, we can do that any time."
Following the same logical train of thought, we could certainly see a V-Series of the Cadillac Converj. If you're interested in hearing the news straight from

we still have a year before they release the regular Volt!!!....so at the rate GM is advertising their "new cars" multiple years in advance we wouldnt see a Volt SS untill 2016 at the earliest unless they do the SS wrong like others have mentioned

Oooh. A Volt SS could be a very interesting proposition indeed. A more powerful electric motor, lower, tighter suspension..yes, it could be quite entertaining indeed.

But why? Why have a gimped hybrid only for the sake of lackluster performance when a small light car with a conventional engine would do better and cheaper? Notice "when asked" he said it was a possibility, not "he hinted" or "suggested" on his own. If you prompt this guy with anything he's going to say "Yes we COULD do it." Not "we WILL do it." There's a big difference. He's never going to say anything is out of reach of his company and engineers, he's just keeping competitors off balance. So yeah, they COULD sacrifice mileage for more power, but WILL they?
My guess is no.

I'm pretty skeptical. Don't water down the SS name, Lutz. If you can make a screamer out of this, fine, but don't go halfway just to get the cash.

I don't think GM could water down the badge any more than it did with the Malibu SS and the Silverado SS.

They already did that with the Malibu Maxx SS. What a joke, the SS moniker has become. What next, the SS comes standard with an extra kilajoule of electricity and Memorex exhaust sounds?

Watering down things is what Government Motors does best.
This thing isn't even out yet ($40k! for a CHEVY), it is tiny, it only seats four, it uses unproven technology (and since it's from GM you can bet that technology will fail badly), and it won't be profitable without heavy government subsidies (taking from taxpayers at the point of a gun).
Yet despite all this, they are already talking about more varians? And they're going to have a Cadivolt (the Converj) too? What are they smoking? What will that cost? $80k? $90k?

You're right, the money STOLEN FROM PRODUCTIVE TAXPAYERS is being used in a SOCIALIST nationalization scheme to prop up Government Motors. It's the government instead of the market picking winners and losers--the consumer has spoken and GM is a LOSER that should die.
