SEMA 2009: World's only known four-rotor Mazda RX-8

BMI Racing Mazda RX-8 four-rotor - Click above for high-res image gallery
We came across this RX-8 at SEMA and it immediately rang a bell. Time Attack, four-rotor, Mazda RX-8? It's the BMI Racing car we saw on Streetfire a while back. It's said to be the only four-rotor RX-8 in the world and it looks and sounds incredible. Don't believe us? You can see a couple of videos after the jump and judge for yourself.

Whats the displacement get bumped to then? 2.6L or something? Cool to see someone innovating rotaries.

MadMike has a Turbo RX8, the 4 rotor car that he has is a RX7.

I think Mad Mike in NZ drift series has already been running a 4 rotor Rx8

Mmm, I'd still rather take an FD version (there's at least one in Japan) but kudos for taking it to the track rather than doin what most shops do and build a car to show off their skills on the showroom floor.

Now that's what I'm talking about!

Is that a 4 rotor built from rx7 engines or some weird hybrid with two rx7 rotors sandwitched in the middle of a rx8 renesis engine?

All the rotors would have to be the same since MSP and REW rotors have very different compression ratios. I would be this is just two 13B-REWs from the FD with the custom e shaft and intermediate plate. Basically what RX-7 builders have been doing for years. Still sounds awesome though.

Pretty sweet track car.

It can burn twice as much oil as a regular RX8!

With loads more apex seals

Sheesh. Let if frickin' go. The whole "OMFG it uses oil!!1!!" is so:
1. Tired.
2. Wrong.
(I own four RX-7s and an RX-8. Not much oil use between them.)
Benfolio 1:58PM (11/06/2009)
Ah, but how does your RX-8 like cold starts?
RX-8 2:50PM (11/06/2009)
Twice as much oil? So I might need to dump in two quarts between oil changes.
Cold starts have not been a problem.
I have driven my RX-8 every day for 5 winters (coming up on 6) in Chicago. It has started fine every time. I let it warm up for a few minutes longer than I would a regular car but nothing that I would consider a major inconvienence.
