VIDEO: Chevrolet Camaro attracts all types, including 101-year-old Virgil Coffman
Close your eyes and try to envision the typical 2010 Chevrolet Camaro owner. We're guessing there weren't many of you imagined a cane-touting Centenarian, but that didn't stop Virgil Coffman from picking up a 400 horsepower Transformers Edition Camaro SS as his new joy ride. Coffman purchased his bright yellow pony car from Miles Chevrolet in Decatur, Illinois, but only after talking to dealer management. The dealership wanted to make sure Coffman was sharp enough to operate the modern muscle car, and management went away feeling that their elder was still "bright eyed and bushy tailed."
We're thinking that it would be pretty unlikely that any dealership is going to pass up on a $35,000 sale given the state of the industry, but after watching the video recreating his trip to the dealership, Virgil sure seems to be on top of things. Hit the jump to hear why Coffman purchased his hot new Camaro. We're thinking we need to eat what this guy is eating.

That's fantastic to hear... but a Transformers edition?

It's really the only 'top of the line' model you could buy at a GM dealership for the Camaro. I guess he figured go big or go home, plus it's not like we could say he should've waited for the convertibles next year or the still just a rumor Z28, he's a 101 years old.
Kristovar 1:31PM (11/05/2009)
Haha, good point. Unless they had sold him one with all of the ground effects/painted engine cover/aftermarket rims/etc.

There is nothing "top of the line" about the Transformers edition. It is just a couple of stickers and badges. It should have included a hood and bumper to match the movie car.

Of course he got a transformer edition...it's more than meets the eye!!!!

Great, let's see how long it takes for him to "accidentally" back up into a store window.

Agreed. And in the mean time, he'll be driving it an 30 mph in a 55...
I'm sorry, but elderly people need to get off the road. They are a hazard to themselves and to us.
Yes, I'm being stereotypical, but I'm also 90%+ correct.
Mr Clickerson 2:11PM (11/05/2009)
So I guess you think Carroll Shelby should get off the road, as well? Elderly drivers aren't morons, they simply know their limits, and they realize that since they're older, they won't be able to react as fast, hence their driving under the speed limit. You always have the option to pass or take a different route, but don't blame them for taking YOUR safety into account.
You want to know who's a hazard? Kids who just got their license, and focus on all sorts of things other than driving. 3-4 months back, I was sitting at an intersection, and watched some kid driving an Acura NSX make a left turn heading in the opposite direction from me. Traffic was backed up, nearly to said intersection, and guess what I can see through the windshield and un-tinted windows? A kid where a goofy green hat and glasses with a cell phone on top of the steering wheel. He rear ended someone because of it. IQ tests should be required for new drivers.
mikemaj82 2:46PM (11/05/2009)
so you're comparing Carroll Shelby to every elderly person on the road today? wow.
Rich 2:46PM (11/05/2009)
Yeah, you're all wrong, making big assumptions about people based on their age.
For one thing, this gentleman hasn't crashed his Camaro, and *you* can't predict if he will or not because you know *nothing* about him.
The kid in the TSX crashed because he was using a cellphone.
Technological solution to people using cellphones instead of driving? Make it mandatory to install big flashing lights and a 20 mph throttle restrictor that is activated by cellphone signals from within the car. It should also honk the horn repeatedly.

"Yes, I'm being stereotypical, but I'm also 90%+ correct."
And 100% a d-bag. Leave the guy alone.
ferrarifan14 10:52PM (11/05/2009)
Wow is all that I have to say... the stupidity and ignorance of some people...
Mr Clickerson 12:24AM (11/06/2009)
Rich... Never said ALL kids were that way- I simply said "kids that", yadda yadda yadda... I'm a kid, too- 19, and I don't do that, so why would I generalize myself with something I'm not? lol
john 10:40AM (11/06/2009)
Acefighter I dought that I think that once you hit 65 or so you should need to be tested to retain your license but to say he needs to get off the road is just mean. Is your dad still driving or your grandmother if you had your way they would need to depend on you and from the sounds of it your to busy needing to speed all over the place. I'm a 40 year old man and I drive to fast at times and do get frustrated when I get behind an older person but they have a right to be there just as you do. GROW UP AND LEARN SOME RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they misspelled his last name....there shouldn't be an M in it....jk
But seriously older people have slower reflexs and are more at risk to accidents
due to health related factors. That being said, good for him. I hope he enjoys it.
I just hope I'm not driving nearby.
patgreenvase 10:42PM (11/08/2009)
I say good for him. He has a right to buy any type of car his heart desires. THese you ng folks that think that older folks are supposed to give up their life when they reach a certain age need to be enlightened.
mikemaj82 12:31AM (11/09/2009)
"older folks are supposed to give up their life when they reach a certain age "
sorry I just had to chuckle at that.

Home I'm still going strong at 101 and can afford a new Camaro.
