2010 European Car of the Year nominees announced
You'd expect the European Car of the Year contest to be stacked mainly with European cars, of course, if not cars from around the world that are sold in Europe. But this year, the fight is being waged almost exclusively between European cars that we don't even get on this side of the Atlantic.
The candidates for the 2010 awards were announced back in June, but that's basically just a list of eligible vehicles. Now the panel of automotive journalists from across the old continent have picked their seven nominees among from which the final winner will be selected. Those up for the prize are the Citroen C3 Picasso, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Yeti, Toyota iQ and Volkswagen Polo. The iQ is the only non-European product on stage, and the Mercedes the only car among the finalists even currently available in the North American market. That's definitely a bummer, but even without us, we expect the winner to be announced by the end of the month.

The Euro-CoTY award rarely goes to all out performance models. If you look at the list of past winners (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Car_of_the_Year), the vehicle chosen is usually a particularly well-executed example of a more mundane sedan or hatchback.
For this year’s award, my money is on the Toyota iQ, VW Polo, Citroen C3 Picasso, or Opel/Vauxhall Astra (in that order). Any one of these would make an excellent choice.

The fact that the new E-Class probably won't win this award is why I have absolutely zero respect for the current state of European automotive trends. If you asked me to make a "Worst European Car of the Year" award, all six of the other comptetitors would be in the nomination pool. What a bunch of suck on wheels.

OBVIOUSLY the best European Cars of the Year are the Ferrari California, Audi R8 V10, Lamorghini LP670 S and such.
But these awards are for normal cars and out of the list, and having been / driven a few of them, the list is decent. Personally I like the new Polo, looks nice, built to perfection and with a GTI version, what more can a guy want?

the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class = obviously the best car, but too expensive, won't win
the Opel/Vauxhall Astra = feels like 6 years ago inside .. won't win
Volkswagen Polo = fantastic car, but too smal, won't win
Toyota iQ = cute, but way too small and not european, won't win
Then it might be the following, but nah
Skoda Yeti = good car, looks horrible and secretly we don't like skoda, they used to be crap, won't win
Citroen C3 Picasso = i love it , looks good , is cheap .. but not "serious" enough
And we have our winner ::-D

I love this car .. cutting edge tech , very very confi insite .. dno, it just has something about it.
it won't win tho .. they'll just go for the polo of astra .. :(

i hope the Yeti wins , it's not pretty , but it's a good, honest car and i think the name is fitting.

I'd pick either the Astra or the E-Class. I'm not sure why any of the others are even on the list.

I don't like anyone of them except E-Class and iQ
The VW Polo it's only a mini-Golf with a quality a bit upon the average but it doesn't innovate in anything and looks a bit... weird
The Opel Astra hasn't begun to sell yet and it already looks old for me...
The Peugeot 3008 have increased its interior quality respect other Peugeot and the design inside is pretty cool but the exterior is one of the ugliest cars of the moment. Although seems that it's selling quite good.
Skoda Yeti... Are you serious? And what else? The Roomster?
The C3 Picasso doesn't seem to me nothing new and I'd rather the Kia Soul. If was the DS3, it could be a good candidate.
But the Toyota is really awesome and has all kind of luxuries that you ever imagine. Like a good Toyota, it looks like a washing machine but it's a great car and deserve this prize
