SEMA 2009: Production Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec slips into SEMA

If someone hadn't reread the Hyundai press release, we might have totally missed seeing the Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec. Compared to the RM460 and other tuned Coupes in the booth, the R-Spec just didn't sparkle enough for us to pursue it. And perhaps that's the point.
The 2.0T R-Spec launches a tuner-friendly line of Hyundai automobiles that have all of the best performance bits without some of the frills that add weight and expense. We saw the car previewed at the Chicago Auto Show back in February, but fittingly, this was the official debut here at tuner-friendly SEMA.
With a base price of $23,750 the R-Spec is basically a 2.0T Track model with a few options deleted. It still has the track-tuned suspension, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with performance summer tires, Brembo brakes and Torsen limited-slip differential, but it also gets front strut camber adjustment bolts to sharpen initial turn-in and overall responsiveness. The best thing about the R-Spec is the fact that it's showing up in dealerships across the country as we speak.
UPDATE: Hyundai has informed us that the R-Spec is 68 pounds lighter than the 2.0T Track model of the Genesis Coupe.

good luck finding one in 10 years that is not totally ragged out, it'll be like trying to find an unmolested 240SX.
However I cannot imagine the cost new is going to be terribly prohibitive.

Another example of why Hyundai is growing at such an alarming rate. They are willing to perfectly cater to the enthusiast not by selling them some expensive hopped up version of their econobox but with offerings such as this Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec which is affordable, good looking, and the perfect canvas for each owner to build the car they want.

Do post the spec sheet on the R-spec

One thing on that spec sheet is the R-Spec does NOT include cruise control.

i believe it's just under 3300lb.

It weighs 68 lbs less, which is not a whole lot. But it also costs $3,000 less than the Track version. Most of the stuff they deleted was to cut costs.

I heard with a nice after market turbo kit this has potential to make 300 and up horses. But for a real enthusiast car, they should have taken out the back seat and alot of the sound cancellation things to make it lighter and faster. but besides that this is a winner in my book.

In the words of Chris Berman, "Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner." This is exactly the type of car that I would love to buy-- cheap, small, fast, and fun.

Why no cruise??? Does removing it really save that much weight? I'd venture to guess a CC module weighs 5-10lbs at most. I'd be very interested in this car if they offered it with cruise, I do alot of highway driving.

Why not get the "Track" version? Cruise control may be nice, but it's not the crowd the R-Spec is aimed at.
Eric Bandholz 6:09PM (11/04/2009)
I suspect it was because the cruise was mounted on the steering wheel and they just took off all related electronics.
ambientFLIER 8:31PM (11/04/2009)
10lbs for a cruise control module? Wtf? I though it was like programming on the ecu, or a small electronic chip...
Deleting all that crap doesn't save weight, it saves money.

I don't understand what people see in this car....it's got no soul or presence. It's a car that simply blends into traffic. I must admit it is better than the last generation but then again in a couple of years it will just fade away. It has no history or iconic flavour to it.

What last Generation? This is the first generation of the Genesis Coupe. And please tell me you aren't one of those morons that think "it looks just like a Tiburon" I've had both, and there is ZERO comparison between them... Unless you count number of wheels and doors as making them twins. I'd say it sticks out pretty well in traffic considering I catch several people a week looking it up and down appreciatively.
