Wolfgang Reitzle back in the auto industry as chairman of Continental
The last time we saw Wolfgang Reitzle involved directly in the auto industry, he was working out of an office in London running Ford's then newly formed Premier Automotive Group. We all know how Jac Nasser's attempt to expand Ford's reach into premium cars worked out and Reitzle moved on to other pursuits. In recent years, he;s been the chairman of the executive board at the Linde Group, a Munich based chemical company. Reitzle has now returned at least part time to the auto industry after having been elected as Chairman of the supervisory board at Continental. Continental has gone through a lot of upheaval over the past year after being swallowed up by the much smaller Schaeffler Group and has been doing a lot restructuring of late. The addition of Reitzle and Wolfgang Schäfer to the executive board is expected to complete the new management team for now. The press release is after the jump.

Personnel Announcement: Supervisory Board Elects Prof. Dr. Ing. Wolfgang Reitzle as Chairman

* José A. Avila to become member of Executive Board on January 1, 2010 / Head of Powertrain division
Hanover, October 19, 2009. In its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Continental AG elected Prof. Dr. Ing. Wolfgang Reitzle (60), chairman of the Executive Board of Linde AG, as its chairman. At the same time, the Supervisory Board appointed Wolfgang Schäfer (50) as a regular member of the Continental AG Executive Board. He will take up his appointment on January 1, 2010, and will be responsible for the areas of finance, controlling, IT and law. José A. Avila (54) was also appointed to the Executive Board of Continental AG. He will assume his position on January 1, 2010, taking over as head of the Powertrain division.
Following the meeting, the new Continental Supervisory Board chairman Prof. Reitzle noted: "With the personnel decisions made today, the Executive Board of Continental AG is now complete and well structured. This creates the basis for leading Continental on into a sustainably successful future."
Wolfgang Schäfer studied business administration in Munich und Münster and later earned an MBA at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. After working at several different companies, including Robert Bosch, he joined Behr GmbH & Co KG, Stuttgart, in 2001 as member of the board of management. In his current position there as Group CFO, he is responsible for the financial and controlling functions, purchasing, HR and IT. He is also CEO of Behr Germany.
José A. Avila studied engineering sciences in Bogota and Pittsburgh. He is currently general manager of the Delphi Diesel Systems unit at the US supplier Delphi. He previously headed business units at Delphi that focused on innovative drive technologies, particularly in the diesel sector.

He did a considerable good job at PAG. Unfortunately it was a project destined to fail. Things at Continental are still in turmoil from a clear strategy perspective. Not their own fault, but Schaeffler had slightly different opinions.
