VIDEO: Toyota FT-86 runs the 'Ring, sounds awesome
Toyota FT-86 at the Nürburgring – Click above to watch video
In a video that should be titled "Things You Can't Do in a Corolla," the FT-86 has been caught in motion and sound at the Nürburgring in Germany. Of course, the pictures posted last week gave no indication of how it ran, but we can tell you – and so can the video – that it is, as they say in the business, "Hot."
We know what the Toyota concept looks like, but we're not exactly sure which version we see on the 'Ring in the video. It could be the FT-86 from Toyota or Subaru's version. However, if Toyota's version goes like the car in the video, when it finally does arrive, Toyota will truly be able to say it is back in the business of fun. At least a little. Follow the jump to see the vid. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Hrm. I just got back from the Lake Superior Pro Rally and heard a LOT of modified subarus, and this one just sounds lame. Where's the typical subie burble? This thing sounds as exciting as a toaster.

I can't hear/watch it here at work, but I bet what you're noticing is the difference between a stock equal length (EL) exhaust manifold, and an un-equal length (UEL) on a boxer motor.
UEL's bring out that boxer rumble.

They are called equal legnth headers, you know, like what porsche typically uses. Not every one like the farting sound of a boxer engine ........

Subaru boxer burble FTW.

Ooh - you say Porsche - must be good then.

@Gruv "heard a LOT of modified subarus"
Keyword is "modified". A stock scooby doesn't sound like that. When this goes to production, you can put a similar "aftermarket" exhaust system on it and probably get the same sound.

I dunno, I always thought those Subaru boxer's just sounded like they have cylinders misfiring. I had a '72 BMW CS and I had that exact problem once (spark plugs)... That 6 only running on 4 cylinders had a roughness that sounded just like a WRX.

I think the Subaru boxer is one of the worst sounding engines . Always sounds like it has a misfire.
Nateb123 3:22AM (10/20/2009)
You guys actually think a boxer sounds BAD?! What the hell kind of gearheads ARE you? And you don't like misfires? You do realize that any engine with highly advanced timing misfires all the time, right? Pretty much any N/A piece of Italian engineering, high-power crazy-ported rotaries (mmm...bridgeport idle, and you fools think a boxer sounds rough), etc are all included in that group. Get a camry if misfires bother you but honestly, this is the site you choose to be a commenter on? Why? You're all complaining about someone tuning a car to have serious top end power which is pretty much the point of every other post on this site.
You guys need to retrieve your balls from your women's purses.

Well said Nate!

I like the sound of it.
I'll wait for the subie version though, there are some proportions of the Toyota concept car that I don't really like. The drawing of the subie version (was posted on AB a week ago) looks fantastic.

I hope you realized that those "renderings" (or 5th grader artwork) is the Toyota FT-86 in blue, some added fender flares, and a Subaru badge.

All the Impreza body parts might be a clue...

Indeed.

So are we sure that's the Toyota version and not the Subaru? Or better yet, is there any way to tell at this point or are we just assuming?
Also... I didn't hear any awesome in that clip... just tire squeal and wind.

It looked more like a Subaru than a toyota but it looks like he was following a Lexus IS at 0:35...which makes as much sense as the funky/ugly body on this test car
