VIDEO: Porsche ad claims Panamera doesn't fall far from the family tree
Click above to view the video after the jump
At least two of us at Autoblog HQ are totally smitten by the Porsche Panamera, despite Stuttgart's decision to jack up the roof and graft a 911-like rump onto an otherwise attractive sedan. Design foibles aside, it goes like stink, comes with copious quantities of interior space and, by most accounts, drives better than nearly any sports sedan on the market. A proper Porsche then?
That's debatable, but Porsche is making the case in its new "Family Tree" TV spot showing all of Ferdinand's offspring scattering across the desert in a beautiful ballet of high-speed, four-wheeled choreography. The first five seconds is far and away the best part, particularly the slow-motion shot of the 718 RSK Spyder leaving a trail of sand and gravel in its wake. Make the jump to check out the 30-second spot and feel free to debate Porsche's "four door sports car" line in the comments below. We know you will...
UPDATE: Added the full, 60-second spot after the jump.

It may be in the family tree but its that out cast uncle........ not even clever camera tricks can make it look small or light.

Yeah but it fell from the tree and hit every branch on the way down.

It's beautiful. And it doesn't have to be small or light.
I think it looks amazing just the way it is.

Right, a rotten apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but it is still rotten.
Let's hope the seed won't grow into a new tree that kills off the original tree.

I've got two Porsches in the garage. And bought many over the last 30 years. And nothing I ever bought from Porsche is related to that bloated pig thing... For the first time in my life I'm actually looking at Ferrari and Lamborghini.
tump 6:26PM (10/16/2009)
tmiller, you're looking at Ferrari or Lamborghini because you don't like the Panamera? I'm sorry, do they have competing four person vehicles?
Sam 7:01PM (10/16/2009)
@tmiller
the panamera looks alot better in person than in video/pictures. I saw a turbo on the road today. it looked absolutely amazing! stop by your dealership to check it out, it really looks fantastic not, bloated like you say.
tmiller1812 8:31PM (10/16/2009)
@Tump - I'm looking at the others not for four dour vehicles but as manufacturers focused on sports cars.
@Sam - I'm going to take you up on that. I haven't seen one in person. You got me...
INNUENDO 64 10:56PM (10/19/2009)
@ sam: you are 100% correct. once i saw one in person it really started to grow on me. The panamera is in no way a photogenic car.

It certainly hasn't fallen far from the family tree.
Rather, right in the middle. It's the child of incest!

Porsche knows that future growth will come from Chinese sales, and those guys want to sit in the back seat, being driven around, and look like the 'Chairman' of something big. The car looks like crap, but Wiedeking knew what he was doing. Go sit in the back of the Toyota Venza or the Buick LaCrosse; it's the same story. We americans aren't the apple of Dr Ferry's eye anymore.

Ah, the old "family loop"... ahem.

First Porsche built an SUV, now a four-door saloon .... who could have ever predicted Porsche flirting with family cars a few decades ago ?
Something tells me they are preparing the Porsche faithful for a full-blown Porsche EV based on the Cayman chassis in the next few years.

I still think the Panamera is more of a Porsche than an SUV. If the thing was better looking, I doubt most of the people who complain actually would.

that is my only complaint, is the oddly shaped roofline, and a bit of bulkiness.
It is a tasty piece of machinery, otherwise, though.

The full 60 second spot is even better:

I think the family tree is the biggest problem with the car. These days, the family tree is centered around the 911. The Cayman got flack because it looked too much like a 911 for 911 owners. It also isn't allowed to be faster than the 911. There are 15 different 911's on the Porsche US web site, but only 2 Cayman and 2 Boxter. I wonder what it would look like if we made a Cayman Turbo, GT2, and GT3 models.
Anyway, the problem with the Panamera is that Porsche decided that it had to look like a 911. The profile is pure elongated 911, the tail, and even the front looks like a Carrera S.
Porsche could have tried something new and original, but risky, In the end, whats more risky? A new look, or trying to sell the Panamera?
