Tokyo Preview: Mazdaspeed3-powered Supasse V supercar

Picture if you will, an exotic car that takes a few stylistic cues from the Pagani Zonda and Ferrari Enzo, then distills them into a package the size of a Lotus Exige. Now imagine if it was powered by a tuned 2.3-liter DOHC turbo engine from the Mazdaspeed3 channeled through that car's six-speed gearbox. And further ponder that the vehicle in question weighs 1,300 pounds less its powertrain donor. That's right, a 270 hp exotic that weighs just 1,874 lbs. Sound like it's something you'd like to take a closer look at?
The Surpasse V, an all-new vehicle by Japanese kit car specialist Suzusho, will make its debut at this month's Tokyo Motor Show, featuring an "aluminum twin-tube monocoque spaceframe" and fiberglass body. Although evocative of many other cars, the design is purposeful and penned by F1 designer Kenji Mimura, and on paper, it sounds like a direct challenger to the 2009 Lotus Exige S260.
Although It would be easy to dismiss the Surpasse V as just another kit car with big power and no handling, Suzusho has plenty of experience building lightweight cars that handle extremely well. The bulk of their business is in Lotus 7 replicas, and while we're not sure it will truly compete head-to-head with the Hethel hauler, it looks promising.
Pricing is expected to be in the Exige-like $50,000-$80,000 range too when the Suzusho Supasse V goes on sale in the middle of 2010.

He and his two sons and his professional staff has been to designing and manufacturing sports car using 3D CAD systems for many years. The monocoque chassis and the suspension is designed by Suzusho. The rear sub frame is bolt on and is easily replaceable. The Suppasse-V is the closest thing on the road that is equal to a competitive racing car which, can be seen at Le-mans and many other circuits. The Body is shaped and designed by the famous Kenji Mimura, who is well known for Dome Zero and Le-mans cars in Japan. We are very pleased to present to you with satisfaction the Supasse V.

I have to say that I am quite impressed by the weight reduction that they were able to pull off.
Also, their power to weight ratio of 6.94 lb/hp is not too bad either.
It's the design of the car that I am not a big fan of

Yuck! The design is a good basic form to my eye, but is festooned with a bunch of little incohesive details that don't work together to enhance the whole. Plus a lot of it looks ripped off--the rear buttresses/glass looks Elise, the unusual low side-cuts on the door look Evora, and the rear end has hints of a Lotus 7, with the squared off corners (not a good thing). To me it looks like that Fiero someone tried to make look like a Ferrari.
If you're gonna have the relatively few constraints of a low volume kit car, you might as well make a bold statement with the design!
Nice specs though if they can pull it off. I doubt it, though, if there are airbags, radio, etc., given the Elise is 1984 lbs and basically the same specs.

Oh, and the side windows are all Evora, too.
Worst design offense: the way the back wing comes down to almost touch the sides of the body, but not quite.

ok, this thing is WAY over designed. But I still like it - for what it is and what it is trying to achieve. I say the more the merrier in this sort of segment.
I still feel the best thing out there so fat is the Artega.

All you nay-sayers in the peanut galleries can trash this DIY mini-race car all you please, but on the street people will crowd around....or especially on the track where it belongs I'd not be surprised if it beat out nearly anything brought out for any DE event short of a purpose built race car.
With so little weight, that much readily available HP, and the right tires....if the suspension is suprior designed....just send me your Porsches, you Elises, your Evos, your BMWs, and we'll see who's driving the posseur 'kit car'.
