Drum-roll please. After making a point of pausing to listen to its dealers for input and suggestions, Buick has just announced the name of its next mid-size sedan. Plucking a nameplate from its not-too-distant past, the brand has introduced its newest model for America, the 2010 Buick Regal. Believe it or not but it's been six years since any Buick wore the iconic Regal tag, until it was affixed to the Chinese market Insignia-based sedan this year.
Following on the heels of the Enclave and LaCrosse, the Regal hopes to continue the march towards reestablishing Buick as a premium brand worldwide. There's no word yet on what changes we can expect from the Chinese model shown above, but since it's based on the Euro-market Opel Insignia, it will most likely be a fine ride. The full presser is after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE
Regal Named as Next Buick Sedan
As part of Buick GMC's strategy to engage and listen to its dealers, more than 1,000 dealers this week will be the first to learn the name of Buick's next mid-size sport sedan will be the Buick Regal. The announcement was made at the Buick GMC dealer business meeting.
"The transformation of Buick began with our luxury crossover, the Buick Enclave and continued this year with the launch of the 2010 LaCrosse premium sedan," said Susan Docherty, Buick GMC General Manager. "We're thrilled to announce that the Regal will be the next member of the Buick family."
The Regal name has played a very important role in Buick's history for many years and continues to be one of the top Buick nameplates recalled by consumers even though it's been out of the market for the past six years.
Buick is emerging as a modern, premium marquee with vehicles characterized by sculpted designs, personal technologies, luxurious interiors and responsive performance. Future new sedans and crossovers will continue to expand Buick's portfolio both in North America and China. More information can be found at www.buick.com.

I don't care about the name as long as that car gets to the States.

amen brother. sign me up for a Regal OPC (or GN or whatever).
and if I'm going to be greedy, give me a Regal OPC Sports tourer. all right, I've gone too far now.

geo.stewart: I'd be willing to bet that Buick is going to watch CTS Sport Wagon sales very closely. If it does well, there is probably good reason to think a Regal Sports Tourer is a possibly. The OPC part is a little trickier.

Looks sharp. Hopefully, this model also gets some younger buyers into the fold and is a sales success for GM.

Kill it with fire if it isn't RWD.

They already have an awesome Lacrosse. What is the point? To retire the Lacrosse name or sell this along side it? Wouldn't that be too much overlap?

I think the plan is to make the Regal smaller than the LaCrosse.
TonyInMI 12:55PM (10/14/2009)
OK - but still to close unless the Epsilon II would be significantly re-engineered - why not just go with Delta II?
Epsilon-Not 1:06PM (10/14/2009)
The Insignia is about seven inches shorter in length than the LaCrosse... this is comparable to the difference in lengths between say, the Impala and the Malibu (about 8 inches), or the Camry and the Avalon (also about 8 inches)...

Thanks for the explanations.
X3S2000 5:36PM (10/14/2009)
And don't forget the not-too-distant past when Buick sold both the A-body Regal and Century. Talk about overlap!
TonyInMI 6:30PM (10/14/2009)
Exactly - W-car Regal and A-car Century were too redundant. Is 6 inches enough to differentiate between C & D segments?
GoLowDrew 12:41PM (10/14/2009)
It's smaller than the Lacrosse. It's more in the Camry-Fusion range. This will also be the next (smaller) Malibu.

What then Epsilon II @ 3/4 scale? Why not Delta II?
Epsilon-Not 12:41PM (10/14/2009)
I notice that Chinese-market Buicks, the Regal pictured included, still have the colors on the Buick trishield- I don't know, it's really minor, but I would like this to come back to US Buicks as well...
