Although the Tokyo Motor Show is just a week and half away, Japan's largest automakers have already previewed their biggest debuts (save one) to their hometown media. So until we can lay eyes on the Toyota FT-86 "Concept," Honda CR-Z Hybrid "Concept" and Mitsubishi PX-MiEV 'ute, we'll have to make do with this brief video walk around.
Shot by Motor Magazine out of Japan, the video after the jump also gives us another glimpse of the Mazda Kiyora concept originally shown in Paris, along with the Nissan Leaf EV we explored in detail back in August. Enjoy and expect full impressions from the floor in Tokyo later this month.

I really hope Toyota has the balls to release the FT-86 as a production car and not just a mock-up tease. Toyota is the new Buick without exciting cars like the FT-86.

That car looks practically production-ready...

Jim, did you LOOK at the pics from a couple days ago?
The FT-HS was the true "concept" form of this car. The FT-86 concept is basically the near production form of that car. Trust me, it's coming.
click_playaz 4:42PM (10/09/2009)
And it's coming as the successful Toyota sport car.
daleam 4:51PM (10/09/2009)
The FT-86 truly is one of the most beautiful cars I have seen in a long time. Toyota would be stupid to not build it.
Tourian 5:05PM (10/09/2009)
It may be "coming." But not for us, last I heard Toyota was going to keep it JDM only and let the Subie model come here.
kbye 5:50PM (10/09/2009)
We don't even know if they are making a subie version. Chances are the toyota version is going to make it overseas anyway.

I would say they're definitely release this car. Toyota has mentioned on several occasions now that their brand needs a HUGE injection of excitement. They're not stupid - they know how to do it. It's not like they don't know how to make high performance automobiles. Look at the Toyota Supra, The Lexus IS-F and the new Lexus LF-A..
Toyota lost it's way for a while making vehicles that the average person wanted to buy - and they succeeded.. Times are changing, however - and they realize (as mentioned in their press releases) that enthusiasts want more - and there are plenty of us..
I'd be extremely surprised if this car wasn't out and about in a year or two...

And if they keep their vortex wheel design separate for left and right sides (so that they all vortex forwards and not one side forwards and one backwards).

My money is on June of next year (2010). That body looks 99% production ready, and I'd bet they can pull that space-age interior and put something normal in relatively easily. Or so I can dream, anyway....

I'd take the CR-Z over the rest, that Toyota looks is just trying to hard.

Disagree completely. I can't believe that's a Toyota. The design isn't clunky or cluttered at all. I'd almost expect it was a Hyundai. And yes, I mean that as a compliment.
PiCASSO 8:50PM (10/09/2009)
Disagree with you, Danimal... I'll take the Toyota, thank you very much. The CR-Z looks like coupe version of the Insight with a snout.
akatsuki 3:56PM (10/09/2009)
I'd imagine that if the platform can support it, it may also be the next IS platform. No need to cut down the more expensive GS platform if there is a good sporting platform there for the taking. Hell, they could go after the Z4, SLK market with a roadster too, or perhaps after the Miata with something with more space than the ill-thought-out MR spyder.

a legitimate 3rd gen lexus IS coupe would be nice, especially if it looks as good or even better which it should.
MeiSooHaityu 3:44PM (10/09/2009)
There is parts of this car that look really good, but then there are parts that look rather awkward and ugly. I want to like it, but some of the proportions just feel wrong.
Maybe it is the roof, or the Nissan Z looking greenhouse, but there is something that just doesn't feel right about it...just can't put my finger on it.
Thanks,

I couldn't agree more. ALL it's best lines are done more successfully on other cars.
Gary 4:07PM (10/09/2009)
I think that the best styling elements of the car will disappear with production.
Emre 3:50PM (10/09/2009)
I liked Kiyora but it will probably never make it to production.

Who cares? A rotary engined sports car with (OMG!) torque will be sold!
